Thanks guy, i'll start searching for a new axle. I thought 4.27 ratio would be right, but you guys prefer something in the 3's?

Has anyone changed their axle and still used it for towing ? If so is it a big difference ? As I would like to change mines but still use it for towing cars ? Thanks.

If you do a lot of towing I would stick with what you have or look along the lines of 4.27 I went for 3,31 as I have no plans to tow anything maybe just a wobble box when we need to collect it from storage

Right i've found a 3.73 axle from a 2.4 mk7. However its from a 6 speed and mine is a 5 speed, is that a problem or is it still a straight swap?

Hi fella, should not be problem , 3.37 is 3.37 . I have one on mine , ratios are similar to a family saloon . Haven't done any towing but l have had a over a ton of cable in the back with no problems.
When you've done it you could take it to Vantuner for a bit of mapping magic

Cheers mate, i'll go and collect the axle in the next few days.

Any ideas what the cost should be for a mechanic to swap the axle?

Take someone with you because they are bloody heavy
As for cost I paid £80 but that was mates rates so I would expect £100-£120 make sure you check the discs and pads as if they are bad you may as well do them at the same time

If you're half decent with a spanner do it yourself. Two man job though as the axle is heavy.
I'm not a mechanic but me and my mate did it in a morning. It is plug in and play also.
No idea how much a professional person would charge. :D
