EGR P0490 fault code

Postby Petters » Mon Jun 29, 2015 3:36 pm

I have a EGR P0490 fault code, its been there as long as I had my car, but now I have to do something with it to get away the enegine light because of new rules on the euro control we have in norway every second year.

I can delete the fault code, and it can be away for 5 minutes or to i stop and start the enegine again.
I have taken of the eletric part of the EGR and checked it, its not stuck and the eletrick part works when I put 12volts on it.
Nothing happens when I put on the Ignition, no clicking in the eletric part.

Sombody now if there is some sensors adjusting the eletric part ?
Sorry for my bad english, I´m Norwegian :)

Over here in the UK. We have very similar rules due to be added to MOT tests in 2017 :(

P0490 EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) "A" CONTROL CIRCUIT HIGH

First check to make sure EGR valve itself is not seized.

This vid here maybe of help  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwsyFzg_OGM

EGR valve itself should be free moving

This rule came this month in Norway, with a lot of others... :(

But the valve is free!

When I had the motor off, I did screw it apart and i tested it with a 12volt charger, and the motor works fine on this. But the motor is not clicking when I turn on the ignition..

I have read a lot of threads on the forum, but cant find any good answer to this problem.. :(

Wouldn't be a faulty relay would it? If the motor and actual valve are fine.

There is no relay for EGR valve on Euro 4 engines.

Motor may work when bench tested. Although there is a EGR position sensor within in the back end cap.

If wiring & plug is ok. Only solution is to replace assembly. Unfortunately EGR motors are not supplied separately from Ford. You have to buy complete inlet manifold :(

Post Brexit, are the 2017 MOT regs being implemented as originally planned regarding functional EGR's :?:

They can be switched of on Connects these days ( a solution wasn't available for years ;) )

Unfortunately yes they are still being implemented.

It's worth noting, even after Brexit. Future EU directives will still apply to manufacturers based here in the UK.
For example vehicle manufacturers. If vehicle / engines (Like Transit engine built here in the UK). Don't meet EU standards, they can't be exported.

Plus testing with a charger isn't the best.. (unless it's a norsk/eng conv) chergers are unregulated and voltage are wild!

If the valve is free I don't need to change the manifold?

I recently had this very fault on an 09 tdci, luckily i had a donor egr valve from the sister vehicle, i swapped both valves from vehicle to vehicle so as i could rule out the valve, turned out to be the manifold, expensive solution unfortunately
