Hello there, I have no idea really! I don't know very much about diff ratios but all I was saying is the MK7 I drove was only 100ps and had a 5 speed box, and was very low geared as it was used for towing and cud fly along nicely with over 1.5 ton of woodchip on the back whilst towing an 850kg trailer. I didn't actually look at the tag on the diff so I can't confirm what ratio it was, (but I will ask for the details from Ford ETIS so we can establish the diff ratio it used). It was a truly awesome van to drive.
My MK6 is 120ps but I do wonder if the engine 'is tired' as I have cleaned out the inlet and blanked the EGR, new fuel filter and air filter, oil and oil filter and it hasn't made much of a difference in terms of performance, wonder if my timing is spot on or could it be that it is out by a tooth or 2 maybe?? I suspect a new fuel pump and or injectors might restore some performance. Thank you to both You and TPUK for explaining about the differences between the MK6 and MK7 axle differences as I assumed they were identical.
So is 5.13 the lowest ration available for my MK6 then ??
The Mk7 RWD are all fitted with Dana rear axles so you have the option to change the crown wheel & pinion in the existing axle.
The Mk6 uses different axles....the 5.88 crown wheel & pinion you mention above won't fit your existing diff housing - ya need to change the whole axle.
Additionally....no offence intended, but you can only drop so much on a Mk6 that's not worth much to start with....personal opinions being what they are I would be looking at a remapped 115~140ps Mk7 with a 6-speed box & a 4.27 diff....you'll have higher torque with a remap, lower ratio gears with a 6-speed box & retain the option of dropping down to a standard 5.11 crown wheel & pinion if you decide that a 4.27 is anything other than perfect.
