Camper mk2 140km/h top speed

Postby scorcher Imports » Mon Sep 18, 2017 2:22 pm

Hi,

I have this mk2 Camper:

This is the GPS top speed.. 100km/h and no more than this.. it´s a original 2400cc York diesel with 5 speed mt75 gearbox, twin wheel rear axle, the question is:

What diff ratio i have and how can i increase the top speed to 140kmh or higher?

- swap the Yourk engine for a 2.5 turbo Di with Lucas EPIC pump (100PS) Diesel with bigger turbo or just go crazy with a 3200cc TDCi ?
- keep the mk75 gearbox (any 6 speed gearbox avaiable?)
- upgrade the rear axle for a mk3 25mm wider twin wheel and lower diff ratio (wich one?)

tallest diff ratio for the twin rear wheels is 4.63:1. Who knows what you have fitted? Have a looked underneath at the axle, should be a tag under one of the cover bolts with the ratio stamped on it.

As for 140 kph top speed, well that is a lot of air to push out of the way! I am surprised the measly 62ps of the 2.4 York will achieve even this! I don't know if a turbo Di would do 140 kph either! Maybe if it had the Bosch pump fitted, and you cranked the boost up a bit and intercooled it you would probably get there. Probably the easier way to go, considering you already have the MT75 fitted.

3.2 TDCI would be a great conversion, been thinking about one of these myself. Not sure how difficult these engines are to transplant, in regards to getting the electrics to work though.

Is your mind made up on a diesel?

The York engine transit with the 4speed box non of them would do more then 62 mph that was twin and single wheel apart from our plant service van that had the throttle stop removed and the pump adjusted for max black smoke would do 73 mph back in the day the Perkins 3108 engine without any adjustment was faster at 82 mph but you needed a good down hill bit or road and a even longer bit of road to stop it

Turbo kits were available for the York back in the day.

Hi Guys, I've been on a top speed search myself too. Usable top speed that is. My mk1 Twin wheeler has the 4.63 diff. I hit about 120-125 km/u at 3000rpm with a Di, mtx box and 16inch wheels. Thats fast enough but I would like to bring the revs down because of the noise.

I have a turbo Di ready to go in but that won't solve anything. 3000rpm is 3000rpm no matter how much hp.

I thought about an overdrive but expensive I think.

Or even bigger wheels :p.

Or maybe adapt a rear axle with taller gear?

Btw: the race car aerodynamics of your camper won't help much either. My regular van becomes noise quite floaty at 120km.
Will try and solve this by putting independent suspension while I do the turbo conversion and lower the front a bit to get some front downforce.

What's the 5th gear ratio in your MT75 a slightly longer one is available using bits designed for different applications of this gearbox.

Any idea where to find the ratio without taking it apart? I thought they're all the same?

Thanks for all the replays, the intention of 140 km/h as top speed is to drive at 100km/h gps comfortable without the engine explode like an hand grenade at any moment..

The limitations I have are legal ones by the registration:
- Fuel type: Diesel
- Displacement: 2400cc
- Power: ND

surely a 2.4 Duratorque would be the easy answer? okay maybe not THAT easy, but has been done, and will fit in the hole!

I have found this 86-98 twin wheel axle, prop shaft and this engine 2.5D turbo with 100k miles (they are in the same place).

Can someone tell me if the diff ratio is longer than my mk2 camper and if the injector pump is the Lucas one?

Also, the engine don´t have flywheel... can i use the 2.4d York and clutch ?

Hi all,

Did you reach the swap of your motor home?

How is the status of this swap?

Cheers.

Well.. right now i'm thinking only in putting a turbo on the york engine... don´t see much use for the camper that justify a new engine.

I'm after 20hp .. let´s see..

Ok... york OUT and 2.5 DI Turbo IN...

Engine from a 1998 twin wheel transit with 230k km

But... i have a problem now.. this engine have a EPIC pump full of wires and don´t want to start...

Where is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CxC6KhJ8UQ

There is no fuel arriving on the injectors... maybe any problem with the shut-off valve in the EPIC pump?

The pump make this sound (click... click...) when ignition is turned on.. and there is some residue coming out on the fuel line... 5 years stoped... https://youtu.be/NsfewZ3cMVs

I also have acess to original twin wheel axle... should i swap it also ?
