Black smoke when turbo kicks in.

Postby JayKay3000 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 8:09 pm

Hi Guys.

My 05 1.8TDCI is putting out black smoke when the tubo kicks in at around 1.6k rpm. It only gives the smoke when going round town and only when the turbo kicks in or at least that's what you can see in your mirrors so it could be doing it all the time.

I've run half a bottle of the diesel version of red x as advised by a local mechanic and I'm going to run the rest of the bottle on my next trip to portsmouth. I've no idea if this stuff will actually do anything or whether this has any affect on the issue.

It does it when hot or cold.

I really HATE the black smoke. When you're on the motorway doing 70mph it's fine, but really noticeable around town. It did pass the emissions test for the MOT, but I'm still wondering if there is a fix or whether I'm just going to have to live with this annoying new feature.

It does mean no one tail gates me though

Not to mention the rear of the van gets black and dirty.

Anyone who's fixed this on their own van I'd welcome the suggestions (except for throwing the engine away!)

Or what tests should I be thinking about asking a mechanic to do? I'm no wrench, but this issue is putting me on the fence to sell this thing.

I have not had the black smoke problem, but mine does suffer with blue smoke when it feels like it! lol
The black smoke is a poor air/fuel ratio. Possible causes are, injectors, fuel pump, blocked air filter, blocked EGR valve. And in some cases a turbo problem.

Sorry i can't assist further, but good luck mate.

It’s worth to check the rubber hoses from the turbo to inter cooler.Even the small crack cause more air an more fuel on the system to run rich.

Interesting ideas! Thanks!

I've been pushing it up to 3k rpm, run some decent fuel and run it with the diesel red x for over 200 miles and it's still the same.

It's going back to the garage again on wednesday as it broke down on the motorway coming back from portsmouth - Heater plug light started flashing, dropped all power and had to turn it off and on again on the hard shoulder and I was driving a steady 70mph for only 40 miles as I'd taken the scenic route down.

I'm going to try and get both issues fixed, but i'll put the ideas to the mechanics as they're pretty reasonable and fair.

Air filter didn't look too bad. Could probably use a full oil change and a service as well.

Thanks again - I'll try and put an update reply if the mechanics work it out over the next week.

Fixed a lot of the black smoke with a new fuel filter. Mine was nearly blocked solid!

Yep, you're right there! I had clouds of black smoke when the turbo cut in and found two hoses had splits in them. New hoses fitted and now clean. As you say, fuel air ratio became air lacking!

Great to hear you have the smoke under control now mate! But keep up with the fast runs still, and give it some beans!
Since i have had mine it has improved no end. You want to get some good heat into the engine and burn off all the crap. I have to travel down a long dual by-pass on my way home each evening, and usually get it up to about 4,500 RPM in 4th doing about 90, before settling into 5th. I also try to do longer runs when i can. It May sound like i am trying to kill it, but i do not redline it - no point in doing that. The benefits are really quite impressive over time for me doing this. And yes, the cam belt is fairly new, and i replace its blood, water and filters regularly, and run it on the expensive stuff - no supermarket crud! :D

Sorry for the waffle, good luck and happy driving pal.
