mk8 transit custom fuel gauge fault

Postby andymurray1977 » Mon Jan 22, 2018 10:05 pm

Hi all

I purchased a 2014 transit custom crew van a couple of months ago and from day one the fuel gauge has had a mind of its own, I have just kept it topped up so its not really bothered me and always seems to sort its self out after a few miles. Apart from today, the fuel gauge did it usual thing whilst driving, registered itself as empty and then the van started to misfire. I had only filled up to the max 30 miles before so I knew I wasn't out of diesel. After a couple of miles the van engine died on me whilst entering a busy round about and the dash lit up with "engine malfunction, service now" I managed to get the van started again but would only run for a couple of seconds and cut out. I got the van to the side of the road and tried several times but it kept doing the same thing. I went to the fuel station filled up a can and managed to get about £1.20 in the van which reset the fuel gauge and then the van started and drove without a problem.

I rang my ford dealer whom said if its an intermittent problem it would be hard to diagnose, so I'm left a bit unsure what to do? I don't want to risk breaking down again or throwing loads of cash at ford to replace whatever they want to. Any advise or help would be a massive great

Many thanks

Lad in work next door has a 14 plate mk8 which did that, I'm vaguely sure that it needed a new sender/pump.

You can try getting fault codes read but it might need live data to see if fuel pressure drops or if there's somewhere that can see the fuel level sensor although it'd probably just show the same as the gauge Lol.

Andy did you get it resolved and what was it? Mine is doing the same and I've got it booked in next week but the mechanic needs a steer!

Fuel tank sender unit, its seperate to the electric pump and clips onto the side of housing, needs tank off.
Best run fuel as low as poss to drop tank, and beware when fitting sender,IT WILL clip in upside down !!

Sorry to drag this one up again, but it's the most recent thread on this topic I've managed to find so far...

So, customers 2014 Transit Jumbo has stopped at the road side, turning over but not starting.
No buzz from the fuel tank sending pump, no fuel coming from the pipes into the engine bay.
Low fuel pressure codes on cranking.
Prime pump fault code there sometimes but not others which is also a bit confusing.

Is the in tank pump really this common on a van that's really not that old??

Just had same problem - new lift pump and sender unit fitted today, will let you know if it’s sorted. 64 plate DCIV with 120000 on the clock, so can’t really complain (although I’m sure I will as I hand over my card tomorrow :-)

Hi all,my van does this, especially when it's cold,I just get under the van and bang the fuel tank a couple of times and the gauge shoots back up again. Not ideal I know, but saves walking to the garage

Mine has done this too, (2014 custom) had a really annoying rattle coming from rear/under van and after checking literally EVERYTHING i banged the bottom of the tank to check it wasn't something inside loose, gauge did not like this and went weird for a day or so!!! Very odd :?

Has the problem been resolved, if so at what cost? As I think mine is on the way to problems. It’s showing fuel economy has dropped as well with no obvious leaks, no smoke, and performance as it should be. But overall gauge reading isn’t where it would normally be for the amount of miles I’ve done.
