Dumped my power steering fluid on the ground. How far should

Postby Digrizrat » Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:17 pm

Suddenly lost power steering, and dumped a lot of fluid on the ground. Multiple liters from the look of it. Luckily I was only turning around in a carpark.

Drove 4km to a friendly place to park for the night, it's a anoying to turn tightly, but driving is suprisingly doable.

Is it safe to drive 230km (145miles) back to my worksite? it's consistently below zero outside here in Sweden so the heated workshop would be a reeeeely nice place to work on the van.

I'm worried about both road safety and causing further damage to the van. Should I disconnect the belt to stop the pump spinning while dry?

2013 mk7 2.2 fwd.

Punto, you always ask the big questions. Without my Haynes manual that's back in the workshop, can anyone help us out?

It does, it shares the shaft, wp is behind the ps pump.

What’s damaged, pipe?

It's dark and I don't want to crawl in the snow tonight. I'll have a closer look in the morning.

I'm hoping it's just a pipe.

I need the water pump, so the belt stays on I guess.

And there's no way to tell how long the pump would last before it seizes and snaps the belt. Leaving me stranded without a water pump.

This is looking like I shouldn't drive it back to the nice heated workshop....

Probably be a pipe, usually where they run along the chassis leg

Is it worth buying a set of hoses? They're all the same age after all. Is it just one pump to rack, and one return?

i will give the pump 10km at best with a lot of burning oil before it locks up and takes out the belt wich stops the waterpump and alternator.

fix it on the spot or tow it.

Had a look, the high pressure hose had popped out of the pump, i think the threads are damaged.

We've sealed it up as best we can for now, and hopefully I can buy a new hose and fitting.Image

The Wee nut is a compression fitting and separate to the pipe.

I just sold a pipe and nut brand new for £40 a couple of weeks back
