Will have a look at tweakability of yours.
Although someone with more experience of your pump will hopefully advise.
hands on experience and all that is better than text book stuff.

max weight full throttle in low gear is bound to sound noisy.

where are you? cos first thing you need is an experienced ear to see whats going on.....it could well be normal for an old transit.

Lol we know that if we put it in a gear from Drive that it will be in that gear.
I suppose the thing is if we can (or can't) improve how it works in some way.

We are in the East sussex area.

In the car of that year of release, there could be a Lucas DPS injection pump, but its appearance is different from what I see in the photo.
Need more information about the type of pump.
In any case, the power of the diesel engine is very dependent on the correct timing of the injection timing.
How did the engine work before replacing the timing belt?
How does the cold engine start?
Is there smoke and what color is smoke?
For many years there could be unqualified interference in the pump and incorrect installation of the cam pulley.
Because of this, if the timing belt is correctly installed, the injection setting will be incorrect.
It is necessary to increase the angle of the injection advance-with the camshaft stationary, turn the injection pump shaft clockwise.

Haynes manual states that 1989 model year onwards has a Bosch OR Lucas/CAV, 5 hole "stanadyne" type.
No problems with cold engine starting and no smoke that I have noticed.
The motorhome's mileage for the year before we bought it was 1 mile which we assume was to get the MOT.
We sort of get the impression it wasn't being used for a while.

If its been sitting around then diesel in the tank drops stuff out which settles to the bottom, when the vehicle is used again regularly these deposits get sloshed about and into the fuel line, so its possible the new fuel filter has picked up some crap and is struggling to supply enough fuel under load, like going uphill.

You can usually test for blocked filter by holding the throttle to the floor in Park, or neutral gear, if the filter is blocking the revs will drop back after a few seconds as the fuel supply reduces, I say usually as again the engine, although revving fully, is not under any real load, so if the filter is only partially blocked it might not show under a full throttle no load situation.

Also there is a strainer/filter on the fuel pickup pipe in the fuel tank, again partial blockage can mean struggling to supply fuel under load.

This might give you a starting point.
compare the pictures with your pump.

If the engine has a good start, works without smoke, but does not pull uphill, there are two possible reasons:
-small fuel;
-Infaulting the injection timing mechanism.
The first reason to eliminate is simple:
replace the fuel filter, blow the fuel pipe from the pumping pump to the tank, replace the boost pump with a working one.
To exclude or confirm a second reason
It is necessary to increase the static angle of injection as I described in the previous post.
If the motor increases the power and the car gets better up the hill, then you need to adjust / repair / replace the injection pump.

yeh if you know very little bout mechanics, its still a very good idea to attempt to replace the common replaceables before spending big money.
I just replaced the air filter in mine, after purcahsing it 3 weeks ago, turbo model (1999 2.5L 100PS 74 kw), and for the first time in my life after owning about 8 cars that i have maintained myself, all gasoline, its the first time that replacing a common replaceable part has made a noticable difference in engine performance. Saying that, the air cleaner was so dirty it had sucked itself in and caved in haha.
Apparently diesels are particularly sensitive to the basic common replaceable parts. so basic maintenance neglect makes a signfificant impact on performance and or economy. Probably more so with a turbo, but id say the same applies to any big old diesel engine like yours.
What im saying is, you will certainly not be wasting money, by replacing the common replaceable items such as fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, and fluids.
And as cherniy sais, after that, perhaps pay to have to injector pump looked at by an injector specialist.

In older machines, there is often such a defect: maybe
incorrectly installed the drive lever of the gas on the injection pump.
Without a load, the engine gas, but does not develop power under load.
............
Cheap Chinese pumping pumps often leak oil through the stock stuffing box.
Leakage of fuel from the pump is rare.
Very often the fuel flows through the quick connectors.

Thanks for your answers - I have been a bit busy so haven't had a chance to do anything yet.
Will look into it again when I have more time.

I have a 1990 campervan 2.5di which I have owned for 4 years. It has had a new timing belt fitted, the fuel pump has been reconditioned and all the filters renewed. The engine has only covered 46000 miles and it has always struggle with hills, sometimes going down to first gear. There is an art to driving the old girl, she will happily cruise along at 60 mph on the motorway but if you see a hill coming you needs to build up speed, say 70mph. On country roads I have found she will get up most hills if you keep the revs up before changing down the gears and half throttle in 3rd will get me up most hills. It is part of the enjoyment of driving her.

Just to say Thank you to all who helped me.

We did have the filters all changed again and it helped.

Due to personal reasons we have traded the Legend GL in for a motorhome with a different layout.

Thank you again.
