Multiple mk1 camper questions

Postby Johny89 » Wed May 02, 2018 6:46 am

Hi, I have an mk1 2.4york diesel camper.
I recently got on a trip and noticed a few things.
Cabin noise coming from engine is extremely high, any ideas how I can silence it ?
Top speed is a bit over 80km/h I know its not a fast car but isn't it too slow?
On a hill it even drops to 60km/h when it does it smokes black so it is getting enough fuel..
Any ideas on this?
Accelerator pedal is very stiff. Al my cars are drive by wire and it shouldn't be this bad. Can I find new cables somewhere?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I know they are not fast but should get at least 100km/h out of it... that way I can ride along trucks without them passing me making me feel a danger on the road.
Btw my oldest car is a 53 years old petrol getting over 100 with ease... weighing 1700kg
Have not weighted the van but I know it catches more wind etc... specs says it should do 100 so does some threads I found here of twin wheelers (more road resistance) doing 100... that s why I think there might be something wrong... Just don't know what.

Multiple mk1 camper questions

Postby bulls in transit » Wed May 02, 2018 9:44 am

The only time my Mk1 does 100kmh+ at a ‘comfortable’ engine speed for longevity has been freewheeling down the Pyrenees!,
Gearing holds speed back, what ratio back axle does van have?
Every car I’ve owned so far ( 1939 dodge,55 consul etc ) has been faster top end than my Transit, but there cars not a van,not geared to pull loads about.
All were designed/built in the days when reaching the speed limit was a bonus, slowing down to meet it a modern phenomenon, kick back and enjoy the view of other people rushing about

You don’t say what year and body type back in the day the first York’s had a bad throttle set up it had a very hard spot on the travel if it’s black smokeing maybe time for injectors and maybe pump overall as for speed the swb had a top speed of 62 mph if it was my van I’d consider fitting a 2.5 di and 5 speed box or maybe a turbo on it as for noise make sure the rubber bungs are all in place in the bulkhead

I think it is a swb but im not sure.
I can't look for another engine. Lost a lot of money on a fraude by someone offering me an engine shipped from where hè was... (was my first thought to do before my first trip.)
I decided to keep up with the york. It only runs black smoke when accelerating or trying to when going up a hill. Taking the hill on a highway at 60km/h is not really fun.
It is a 76 van with motorhome up on it.
Engine is far from its top rpm when going 80. I can hear by the sound when its all the way in fourth I will have a look at the rear end somewhere this week.
Gear box is from an a series truck but normal ly Final ratio os the same as a normal van.

If that’s the same gearbox we had in a A series 35 cwt tipper we had at work it had a pump drive on it that is one hell of a heavy box must Be getting on for twice the weight of the standard box not saying it’s your problem but it’s a lot of weight to carry as for axle ratio why not jack van up securely blocked it up and run it in top gear to see what a no load top speed it’s got if you find out it’s a good top speed you’ll no it’s a power problem also see if it’s got the ratio tag on axle

This is the gear box tag. Took the pic a while ago. Didn't look at the rear yet.Image
