EPIC - ENGINE LIGHT ON - ERROR CODES WON'T ERASE

Postby goldcoast » Mon Jun 11, 2018 3:13 am

I have a problem on a 2000 Australian delivered 2.5 TD Manual 5 speed LWB HR Air conditioned, Transit
The Engine light is on. Revs are limited to 2,500 rpm.
1. Is that limp mode?
It had a rat eat the main wiring harness where it passes through the engine firewall. I have repaired the harness.
The first 120km i drove the engine light went off twice, and I got normal rpm. But then the light came back on, and has stayed on.
I cleaned the connections on the back of the Lucas Epic Injector pump. I have changed the Diesel fuel filter.
There are 17 error codes, Mostly throttle position sensor mismatches, fuel pressure, & EGR (I realise the EGR should have no effect)
I tried 2 different scan tools. Both tools said that they erased the error codes successfully, but the codes still show, and did not erase.
2. Why won't the error codes erase ?
I am changing oil and air filter now. I am about to remove the dash and check for other wiring damage behind the dash.
3. I was told to check for wiring damage in the loom above the head, as the insulation fails from heat there. Is that correct?
4. Does any one know a manual way to erase codes without a scanner?
5. Or Does anyone know what else I should check?
Thanks Will

Maybe not erasing cause youve not fixed the problems......sounds like yer rat Bastardo is up to no good again , i would check all your wiring and double check your repair in case you missed a wire or joined 2 different colours by mistake

Umm...you say it's a 2000 model which is a Mk6...but the picture is a Mk5 which ceased production in 1999....which is it..??

They might be "registered" in 2002....but they won't be a 2002 model.

And they didn't allow that here in Aus....if you go looking for parts and tell them you have a 2000 model... they'll go straight to the Mk6.

OP says it's a 2000 2.5TDi, which makes it a Mk5 (VG?) with an EPIC pump. These were made from 1995-2000 :)

I'm pretty sure that you'll never correctly read, or erase, EPIC codes without a Laser 2000 reader

Lord Knobrot Knobby1
The van is a VL built 05/2000 see the attached photo of the compliance plate
It is 2.5 TDI LWB HR RWD Australian Delivery
You will need to log in to see all the photos!
I will be pulling the dash and checking for other wiring damage.
Do you know how to reset the engine light without a scan tool?
Cheers
Will

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing.... I believe you, but I believe that's just the Australian compliance date...I don't think it's the actual build date.

I have an old '84 model Honda motorcycle, but it's compliance plate, (similar to the one in your pic), is dated 1990, I know for a fact that they were only produced up to 1986.

Pretty sure if you go to a Ford dealer and try to get parts for a 2000 model, they'll more than likely look up parts for a Mk6, 2000-2006.

Thanks Altransit,
I found a local diesel service who has a Laser scan tool, so i'm going to see if we can delete the codes using their Laser scan tool.
For anyone on the Gold Coast in Qld Australia, they are Diesel Injector Services, 10 Bailey Crescent, Southport
I'm doing a final check of all the wiring now, before taking the van there tomorrow. I'll post how it goes.
Cheers

I pulled the instrument cluster out today and found some more rat chewed wires leading to the fuse box and in the drivers footwell (login and see the attached phots). I have repaired most of them, but not the wires to the empty relay sockets in the fuse box. More repairs to follow tomorrow. It is slow tedious work -> trim ends, slide 3 pieces of heat shrink over, bare the ends, twist and solder the joint, slide the heat shrink tubing up one by one and heat it. But it makes for an aircraft quality joint.
I did a test and the engine light is still ON, and the central locking is still not working - Bugger! There must be more wires to fix ....

So none of you can tell if my van is in Limp Mode? (even though the revs are limited to 2,500rpm and the engine light is on)
And no one knows how to reset the Mk5 engine / service light without a scan tool?
There MUST be a way to reset. Ford would have done that.
It is sooo easy to reset my Mk7
Come on, thinking caps on chaps :)
P.S.

I think you are right. It is not erasing the error codes because there is still a fault!
I'm going to pull the left footwell cover and check the wires in there too for damage.
Maybe even pull the whole dash out, to check behind the radio and fan box ...
Cheers

If the engine light is on your in limp mode, and the engine light will go off as soon as you fix the fault but will stay on for about 3-5 seconds after each start to show that you have a stored fault but the engine will drive as normal as soon as the fault is fixed.

Re: ENGINE LIGHT ON - ERROR CODES WON'T ERASE

Hi all. The rats are gone... thanks to a rat cage/trap in the garden .
So, after the first repair of the 3 wiring harnesses where they pass through the firewall near the steering column, the Engine light went off twice while I was driving uphill in 3rd gear, for 2 or 3 minutes, and the van went back to full power and full revs for those 2-3 minutes. But then the engine light came back on and the van was back in limp mode, and has stayed that way ever since. Since then I have rejoined the wires behind the fuse box, though they seem to have only been for headlights, and in the footwell (Central locking Maybe?). I have rejoined all the wires but one. That last one is a 2.5mm o.d. black wire. When I went to strip back the end of the wire it is actually black with a green tracer, covered with a black insulation sheath/cover. I have not been able to find where this wire should connect to.
Does anyone know what it is or where it should connect to?
The wire is coming from a harness located behind the instrument cluster & drivers footwell fuse box.
Also, I have tried connecting Forscan and another laptop App that came with the new OBDII cable. Both say that they cannot connect to anything. I don't know why. I drove the van 42km (25 miles) yesterday. It drives fine, albeit with a rev limit of 2,500rpm because it is in limp mode.
There must be something else still faulty.
I don't know what yet. Any sensible ideas on what else could set limp mode?
Cheers Will
P.S. The central locking is also still not working, but the passenger door lock is very difficult to unlock and I am thinking that might be the cause - faulty solenoid ?
First things first though. I need to cure the limp mode!
