Mark I front seat - does a double passenger seat fit?

Postby bikerwitch13 » Sat Nov 12, 2005 8:29 pm

At present I have two posh seats in my camper, the passenger seat being one of those that swivel. However I have a 13 year old and a 10 month old baby and need to be able to strap both in, one by seat belt and one in a baby chair.

Will a double seat fit? My partner seems to think it will but he thought the van was a Mark II so I would rather hear it from somebody that knows for sure!

If double seat not an option does anybody have any suggestions, apart from leaving one child behind when I go out!

ANY transit seat will fit, we have up to 1999 fitted in ours, better to alter the seat legs than alter the floor, to keep you options open. For appearances and comfort replace both the front seats. If I were you I would look for some really late seats with integral seat belts (expect to pay £50 per seat, ie £150 for a drivers and double), and sell off your original ones on ebay to offset the cost. The middle later seatbelt won't match the original stalk, so get the stalk from the doner van too.

to be honest i'd keep the origanal seats if possable - stuff them in the loft if you can!! then you can put them back on if you ever sell the van!! most people who buy campers want to be able to walk into the cab from the back!!! - obviously not possable with 3 seats!!! :D

Good point, I was just thinking of cost.

Cheers guys! Woody is after a swivel seat and has offered a swap on his double so that looks as though it may be a good option and I am in touch with him on this.

Appreciate the comments about getting from front of van into back, as my doors dont lock and close with a bolt this is something I am going to have to give some thought to...... Perhaps I am going to end up putting a padlock on the outside, I know it wil look awful but I have to do something and its more important to have the kids strapped in.

Fit deadlocks! You can get them in sets keyed alike, they are neater and need to be drilled out to break in. Try Safeways at http:safewaysltd.co.uk

Those locks look nice however a word of warning. I see they make a point of their 'radial' key for some locks. This would the same 'radial' type lock that bike lock manufacturers have stopped using after it was discovered you could brake into it using only a biro!
See here for more:

Or straight to the hard evidence here. This movie is scary if, like me, you own a Kryptonite lock  . Big file probably not for dialup users!

They have other locks with different keys, I'd get one of those 8)

Woody and myself have drawn a blank on the swap as the distance is too great and couriers too expensive so I am still looking for a double seat...............

I was doing something with my passenger side seat in my Mk2 and it looked like they were originally designed to tip fprward. Dont know if this may have been the plan on early Transits but you would need to make up a proper catch to stop it tipping whilst driving. I don't know if you could get through to the rear like this.
