I can't get my steering box arm off

Postby buxvan » Wed Jul 04, 2018 6:24 pm

I'm trying without success to do the above. Have soaked the spindle in various penetrating oils, tried 2 different 2 leg pullers & a blowtorch but no joy.
Any suggestions please ?
Is there a special puller made for this ?
By the way, it's a mk2 facelift swb

Have you tried holding the head of a sledge hammer at one side of the shaft and twatting the other side with a lump hammer like you would do a track rod end?

Cheers dodge, I don't really want to put any sideways pressure on the steering box in case I wreck it.
At the moment I've got a 2 leg puller tightened up very tightly & am giving the shaft regular doses of plus gas & the occasional belt on the end of the puller. I'm also giving myself regular doses of beer.
How's the Lwb ?

Back in the when we got a bad one we cut them off but I was not paying for them we would be fitting a new box so the price of a arm was cheaper the mucking about but maybe if you can get a two leg puller with a slide hammer on it it may do the job

Indeed look for a pitman arm puller. Put tension on the puller and then hit with a brass Hammer on the arm.

Beer helps! the mk2 is doing my head in a bit! The pinto is knackered and smokey and had started to do a head gasket, but being a pinto it's keeping going! I've got a good spare to go in but it's in Derbyshire...I'm trying to get hold of an overdrive box and the bits to make it fit to swap in at the same time, problem being I don't think the 200 mile trip up will end well - luckily I've got recovery.
The body is starting to go a bit as well and I've got nowhere to work down here, to be right it needs a pair of lower rear quarters (which I have) and inner and outer rear valances (which I need to find) along with a front wing (got that too). Just looks really run down which isn't how I like stuff appearing.

I'm actually looking for a good mot'd Lwb mk3 so I can run that for work while I take the mk2 upto Derbyshire for a while to spend sometime working on it.

How's yours coming on?

Actually I don't know the size. You should measure the width of the arm and look what fits. I have one for my F150 was listed where I get my parts haven't tried it on the transit yet.

I had one that was real tight a couple of years ago. Put a big hydraulic puller on it, and cranked it up tight, THEN put some heat on it. Needed both at the same time to release.
I would suggest if that doesn't work, you will have to cut it off with a cutoff wheel. Run a cut down one side all the way through, being careful not to run into the splines. Same on the other side. Tap it with a hammer and it will fall off.

Wey hey! It's off, chap who leant me the hydraulic puller came over & had a go, it still wouldn't budge so I held a sleeve hammer on one side & he hit the other side with a club hammer. Came free on the 4th wallop. He used to be a farm machinery mechanic & is used to combine aaaarrvesters !
Thanks for the advice everyone.
