Rear differential

Postby Viviacolombia » Fri Aug 03, 2018 9:30 pm

Hello,

Again I need some help.

Could anyone identify this differential? Its on my 1967 Transit swb.

What oil should I put into it?

Thanks a lot!ImageImageImageImageImage

I stand to be corrected, but I think that is a Ford 9 inch axle ? If so then it is not original Transit. Interesting anti roll bar.

From what I can gather, if it is a 9 inch then 75W90 is the oil to use but the problem is getting the old stuff out.

transit axle, with a Baja diff :?: :?: or county diff :?: :?: anti roll bars were an option but usually on high tops or 4x4 s

The mechanic recommended 80w90 so got the old stuff pumped. Came out muddy and shiny bluefish.

I guess any new fluid is better than the stuff that came out.

There are some number on the left hand side, but difficult to read. Will try to post them tomorrow. Maybe that'll help?

If it has a limited slip diff in it it will need an additive in the oil of the proper lsd oil

Looks very much like the axle in this article about the 9 inch axle.

https://www.hotrod.com/articles/9-inch- ... -distance/

On that basis, the good thing is that you have a large number of possible final drive ratios. I wonder what ratio it has got in it at the moment ?

If you still have the propshaft disconnected, then the easiest way to check is by turning the yoke at the front and counting how many turns of the yoke for one revolution of the wheel.

80w90 was the original specification but it seems 75w90 is the modern one to do the same, so either would do - whichever is easiest to get.

definitely a 9 inch. I have one in my SWB Mk1. Oil depends on whether it is LSD or not.

What engine you got in yours?

To tell whether its LSD I would need to open it up right?

I got the 2.8 V6 Cologne engine.

If a lsd has been fitted by from new by Ford or by a dealership it should have lsd stamped on the axle case to note it needs topping up with the correct oil

no, just put a floor jack under the axle and lift both wheels off the ground. Rotate one back wheel by hand. If the opposite side turns in the same direction, it is an LSD. If it turns in the opposite direction it is not LSD.

Conrad,

The OP has an auto box at present, although the plan is to change it to a manual (see other posts). Even in Neutral an auto box will tend not to allow fully free rotation of the rear wheels. So does this affect the LSD test with a very draggy pinion ?

Hi Doug, yes some drag on the propshaft would still allow the test to work, in fact would probably show it up even better. :)

Finally found the time to jack it up again and do the tests.

If I rotate one tyre by hand, the other one doesn't turn at all. Tried both sides.

If I rotate any of the tyres one complete turn, the driveshafts rotates around 1.6 times. Maybe 1.7 or something in between, can't measure it more accurately unfortunately.

I also noticed that the driver side wheel is easier to rotate by hand than the passenger side one.
Tyre tread depth on driver side is less than passenger side by about 1mm. Back wheels got drum brakes. There are no noises coming from the differential while driving.

What should I deduct from these observations?
