Postby browneye » Fri Nov 18, 2005 2:31 am

Hey all, im in australia and am having a massive ammount of trouble trying to find brake shoes and wheel cylinders (more importantly brake shoes) for the front and rear of my mk1 transit (1972)

can anyone help me out? anyone in australia with a MK1 that has gotten ahold of these before?

also im interested in getting some parts sent over from the uk, where it seams parts like this are very very easy to find... id be interested in getting all 4 wheel cylinders and all the shoes sent over. anyone want to help me out?

cheers
Matt.

Your brakes will be different to ours over in the UK mate as you run different axles!

Time to fit falcon discs and HX callipers
Castlemain Rod Shop do a conversion kit for drum transits

If your freaking about the price of lenses you dont want to ask about brake parts

To rebuild a transit 2 piston calliper it will cost $200 for pistons and $90 for a seal kit compared to $40 odd to do the HX unit

A new non vented 270mm disc will cost $210 and a 285mm vented and slotted falcon disc will cost $140

It would be a good move as you get a 285mm vented discs and a very strong and cheap calliper

You also end up with a good stud pattern and have a big choice of wheels

I was lucky with my van, my 2 piston callipers and solid discs were stuffed
But i managed to get my hands on some rebuilt 4 piston callipers and near new 270mm vented transit truck discs for nothing, But you need to modify your hubs so the calliper clears them
Yeah i know its big green and rusty so move your Porsche before i bash it with 460 cubes of fords finest cast iron

Going way back in my memory I used to exchange old shoes with new ones where they used the old ones to bond new material to resell which means you should be able to get your old ones done up. Grab an old pair at a wreckers to save being off the road too long. I'm sure a generic ford cylinder kit will fit the cylinders. It was pretty standard in the old days for cylinders to be rehoned and new seals.

Yo Sundowner

What's involved in the conversion? Sounds like the way to go.

Dont know whats involved exactly but im guessing its the same as the swap i did to my cortina as transit and TE cortina have the same stub size

What i had to do to the cortina was use XA 2 peice hub/discs discard the original discs and have the face of the hub turned down 9mm to get the correct offset for the calliper

Got a new pair of slotted discs from RDA and pressed in the new studs supplied in the CRS kit

Fit a new set of HQ wheel bearings

sourced and rebuilt a pair of HX callipers and fit them to the stubs using the adaptors in the kit

had a pair of stainless lines made

Prices

CRS Conversion kit $210

RDA Slotted discs $280 pair

XA hubs $50

Machine hubs $50

HX callipers $90 pair

Rebuild callipers $80 pair

HQ bearings $50 pair

Stainless lines $180 pair

TOTAL $990

Still not cheap to do but it will be cheaper next time you need to do the brakes

You can go that way too

so say you get a mk2 that has'nt been driven for a while for $500

You pull the brakes and find the pistons are rusted and you need new pads
what are you going to do? you cant just push the pistons back and fit new pads as the rust will damage the seals and they will leak

Pistons for these are between $90 and $117 and theres 2 in each calliper
seal kits are $90 each and the pads are around $70

Thats nearly $720 just to rebuild the callipers

And your still stuck with tiny pads

What if the discs are rusted? yeah you could go and get them surfaced but what if their already at their minimum?

Discs are around $210 for a non vented 14.3mm thick discs

You could be up for nearly $1700

You may be lucky and get a van that has really good brakes then you may not, I dont like to see people get ripped or do them selfs out of cash

If i didnt get my hands on the other brakes i would have gone with the falc discs

You can do the conversion a little cheaper by not using the braided lines and slotted discs this would save you nearly $300

Ok you've talked me into.... I'll do nothing!! <grin> When the drum brake cylinders die (probably in dingo territory) I'll see if I can adapt some other Ford cylinders. Shouldn't be too hard.

Still not convinced UK parts arn't interchangable, rear axles might be different but drums etc are probably same, no reason for them to change them unless they were using parts from Falcon which means I should find them elsewhere.

Cheers
