Turbo actuator noise with engine off

Postby Bill H » Fri Dec 29, 2017 12:34 pm

Any advice really appreciated here. Ive got a 140 PS RWD Mk7 transit with the 2.4 engine.
I understand this has the Variable Vane Turbo witgh electronic actuator.
When I stop and turn engine off I can hear a strange noise coming from the actuator - its like a buzzing sound as though there's a motor trying to move something, noise stops after about 2 mins.
This is definitely the actuator as you can feel it trying to move something inside.
Is this a known problem?
Can the actuator be removed and replaced without taking out the turbo?

Cheers

First things first, how does it drive?
Is it not as good as it's been?

Could it possibly be the actuator is struggling to park because of coked up vanes, hence the extended noise as it tries to shut down. :?:
I'm not saying that is your problem.
With the correct software it should be possible to to test the actuator, hopefully it's not damaging itself trying to 'park'.

If there is plenty room around the turbo then the variable part of the turbo can be removed I should of thought, Mr Muscle oven cleaner works as a cleaner apparently.

I've not got any experience of doing this, but I have the same type of actuator on a car I own and I'm really excited about the prospect of doing the same. Not.

I'm sure someone with more experience of this will be along soon. :)

Thanks for your views Jumbo57, yes its a bit of a worry that it might be that. Van is definitely down on power, and we had an EGR error the other day.
Hoping that someone could give me benefit of experience on how easy it was/ or wasn't to check this out and if it was a common issue.

Have you fitted a new egr :?:

Actuator should make a noise like an elf hacksawing a bit of thin sheet metal.

Mine also makes a high pitched whining or signing noise from what I guess is the ABS pump for a few mins after switch off.

It's the EGR doing it's "self clean" process.

Didnt replace or touch the EGR, just reset the error code to see if it came back.
The noise certainly sounds strange - an elf sawing sheet metal may be a good description,
Maybe I'll have a poke around and a bit of WD40 to see if it goes away. Doesn't seem like the EGR though, if you pout your hand on the turbo actuator you can feel it buzzing and griunding away.

SOrry - meant to update this with the final fix.
It was the turbo actuator - sounded as though there was a gear wheel inside with the thread stripped so it could never 'park' the actuator.
Replacement actuator fixed it
