Heated screen fault.

Postby Ash4d86 » Wed Nov 28, 2018 4:33 pm

I know there are a lot of posts regarding heated screen only working on one side. However, what I want to know is a how , using a multi metre do I check if the screen is bad? Anyone able to give relatively decent, step-by-step guide?

Had my screen replaced in January as passenger side stopped working. Have the same issue again now in the last two weeks. Checked/ swapped fuses and relays over and same issue. Any reason this fair could be reoccurring?

Thanks.

The heated screen is in 2 halves as you know and they are loads of little wires that are basically arranged the same way as a light bulb, you add live to 1 side of the wire and ground to the other, the power shorts out through the wires and causes them to heat up in the same way as a light bulb does. It never gets that hot though at best you'll feel warmth on the screen but even cool to touch its enough to melt frost /mist.

To test you'll remove the A pillar trim and find the 2 spade terminals, 1 will be upper and 1 will be lower, they are the only bit that connects to a riband that comes off the glass. If you put a multimeter to them you'll see a voltage when the screen is on.

If no voltage and the screen is on then there's a fault at the relay or fuse or wiring. If voltage but no screen then there is damage to the screen.

Note.
I haven't studied the screen other than I have seen the elements inside and they all collect at the riband so I see clearly how it works, the bit I don't understand is 2 fold. The fault would be a break in the circuit you'd expect but then why does it result in total failure? Are the elements collectively joined at the riband in such a way that if 1 melts it causes a short to the others resulting in complete failure? Seems a bit rubbish that, why not have the odd element go down but it still works? I hardly think that the elements would melt inside the glass surely? But that wouldn't cause complete failure either.

Ah well. :D

Thanks for the reply.

A pillar on passengers or drivers side? (I assume there’s just one set of spades and not a set for each side?)

Also not familiar with a multi metre; I have bought one just for this test as it cheaper than having someone else do it. Plus we all have to start somewhere right. So what setting should I be using? Don’t want to blow anything but using the multi metre incorrectly.

Multimeter is straight forwards it does pass a very small voltage because that's how it works but if you set it to volts dc you'll be fine it is v= broken lines and not v~ which is ac.

The window is in 2 halves left and right so naturally there is 2 spades behind each pillar.

You can't hurt yourself with 12v and a long as you don't touch ground with anything that is live then you won't blow any fuses.

You'll need to fit the tester probes to each terminal then activate the engine and heated screen then see if the tester reads 12v-14v as it'll be charging.

And the versict is....

It’s a dead screen!

Now this is supposedly a Ford part, and only replaced the original (as far as I know) in January. Any reason it would keep blowing?

Thanks.

So you have voltage on the connectors both sides, but the screen isn't clearing either side :?:

Voltage both sides but only drivers side clears. Which is exactly the issue I had in January. Had the screen replaced but only 11 months on have the same issue.

Just bad luck or a potentially a reason passenger side keeps going?

Did you put multimeter on the riband part and not just the spade connecters in case its a bad,/dirty connection, some times the spade heats up and slackens off, i had one that stopped working and it was just a slack spade connector , tightened it up and worked perfect

No, I did just put it on the spade part. I will double check it. Where on the ribband, or will anywhere on it do?

Thanks.
