correct being a direct injection, rather than indirect like the escort orion and fiesta, hence the need for a bit of heat :wink:

Thats the end of the post heat phase your seeing there.

the light goes out at the end of the pre heat phase, this should give enough heat to help aid combustion, the post heat phase continued to heat the cylinder during the first few revolutions. That helps to get the engine running smoothly on all cylinders with the sudden influx of cold air and cold fuel. As a by product of getting a good burn on the cold engine you also reduce the grey smoke emissions.

The later 1.8's had a fuel heater to help further with that.

Fitting the glow plug relay from the 1.6 diesel alters the timings, it gives a longer pre heat phase before the light goes out, but the post heat is much less. Overall heating of the plug was about the same though.
