Soot & black smoke

My 07 plate connect has been off the road for 8/9 months & now I want to get it through its MOT & use it but after starting it up I've noticed it pumps out black smoke & has a patch of sooty sh*t on the ground floor the exhaust. It still runs well but obviously isn't going to pass the MOT.
I've been told to try spraying cleaner into inlet manifold to clean egr & take it for a good run so doing both tomorrow but wonderful what else I can do to help stop the soot & smoke.
Van was running great before being parked up so don't think it's anything major wrong with it.
Is there anything else I can too cute this problem???

It's hardly surprising it's chucking soot and smoke out,considering the length of time it's been parked up.Chances are,it just needs a good run out,to sort it.
Give it a good blast down the nearest motorway.
