Mk7 61 plate transit starting problems!

Postby Mnwatson90 » Thu Mar 14, 2019 12:13 pm

Hi I’m new to this so bare with me haha. I’ve got a t260 61 plate mk7 transit and the past few months It’s been a nightmare to start. Every morning I’ll go out and it will start no problem. It will tick over for about 2 seconds and then start. But as soon as I drive it somewhere and switch it off it will take ages to start again. Eventually after a few turns of the key it will start. Once it starts I have zero problems, it runs great. The only thing I’ve noticed is when I have a full tank of petrol it starts a lot better, not perfect though. As soon as I get down to about 1/4 tank it’s starts playing up again. I’ve taking it into a few garages but no luck. Any sort of information on this would be great. Thanks

I'd suspect an air leak in the low pressure fuel lines, is the fuel filter empty after sitting for a while..?? Check all the low pressure and leakback lines and O-rings for splits or obvious problems. The filter head often cracks letting air in also.

Ignition switch and crank sensor are another weak point.

I'm still not convinced. He also says it's a T260 but weren't all the T260s FWD.....?

'61' plate is the changeover time between Euro4 and Euro5 emissions compliance. The fact it's a 100PS engine suggests it's a Euro5 which has a totally different fuelling system to the earlier vans. I don't have any personal experience of the Euro5 vans and I don't know if they suffer from the same injection problems as Euro4 vans but it's worth doing the checks Knobby mentioned.

You should also get the fault codes read and maybe do an injector leak-off test.

So wee update. Went out on Monday morning to start it and it wouldn’t even try to kick in. It was just turning over. Where as before it turn over and still try to kick in and eventually it would. So the battery ended up drained because I tried a few times. I hooked the battery up to a charger for a couple of hours and went out and the van kicked in near enough straight away. Battery was replaced last November and alternator was replaced about a year ago. How is the battery draining down?? Surely the alternator should be charging it.

Even new batteries can be duff....how many volts across the battery with engine off and then with engine running..??
