High level radio / cubby hole

Postby Joncording » Wed Jan 02, 2019 11:25 pm

Sorry if I have missed something by not knowing what to search for, but in my new (to me) tourneo custom there is a high level storage compartment in the cab.

This feels like the perfect place to add some modifications, either a WiFi unit, or a android head unit, or a raspberry pi car pc, or something cool.

My question is ... what is this space there for, it looks like the size of a single din radio, does it have power nearby that I can tap into or will I still need to run cables back to fuse box etc. No matter how much I Google it I cannot find anyone discussing it, perhaps I am using the wrong terms?

All help appreciated.

It is where the tachograph goes.

I don't know if it has power there but it shouldn't be hard to add if needed.

Like loot said it’s for the taco if your lucky and because yours is a tourneo it might have the plugs there they should be tucked one side and then there’s another loom that plugs in to those to extend it to the taco iv got my CB in mine unfortunately mine didn’t have the plugs and I got the loom for nothing so if you need one iv got one
just follow the onscreen instructions and it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is, we keep producing better idiots

It housed the beacon and aux switch pack too if spec'd
don't believe there's a loom unless you had tacho or switches factory

I liked at mine and there's no obvious wiring there, I have an lcd rear view mirror there and I have a twin camera road traffic camera, I may need to use the interior light circuit to power them, that depends on the fuse rating otherwise I'll need to run a fused feed up there I think. :D

If the custom is the same as my mk8 it had a taco in the left hand side and a switch panel in the right hand side for rear lights passenger lights now has 2 2 way radios in them

I too like Loot have bought a twin camera reversing kit, the monitor clips onto my newly fitted rear view mirror ( salvaged from a Mondeo)
It’s a Chinese kit, 4 pin hard wire, the cables power the twin cameras
There’s an inline glass fuse for the feed, my eyesight is very poor at the moment after surgery on my right eye which makes any intricate work difficult
Using a magnifying glass the fuse looks like it’s marked “F2AL250V”,does anyone know what amp that rating is or is likely to be?, the information would help me decide where to pick up the live feed
Mine van is a 2017 SWB Limited with the bulkhead still in place
Did Loot fit his yet?, did he use the interior light for the live feed?
I want the cameras to work 1) as a “rear view mirror “, so on most of the time, and 2) the second camera as a reversing camera which only comes on when activated by a remote control to switch channels
The seller said this was possible (before I bought it) if I didn’t connect one wire to the reversing light, but when I received the kit there was no wiring diagram and
it’s very difficult to get any sense out of the seller by email
I’m assuming that a feed from the interior light is a type of ignition controlled feed (possibly with a delay). I don’t want the cameras to be permanently “on” which would eventually flatten the battery
If Loot could advise how he got on with his installation or any other suggestions I’d be grateful

Hi I haven't fitted mine yet, I was planning to use either the interior light or find a power source there, some have the wiring for the tachograph but mine doesn't, if I need to I'll just route a cable down the pillar to somewhere.

I think the interior lights are ground switched and the live shuts down after a set time with ignition off.

Alternatively you can get a comparater circuit which you can set to 13v which means it powers down when the engine stops running.

Your fuse is 2A so you can wire the camera to most places.

Most places it is illegal to have an lcd screen on unless reversing or with handbrake on :(

Thanks Loot
That’s a blow about the lcd screen being illegal while driving
I imagine it’s to be able to prosecute lowlifes who watch DVD’s while driving?
Just to clarify, mine clips onto the interior mirror, looks like an interior mirror, acts like an interior mirror when not powered, but I intend to have it powered when driving, giving a rear view like an interior rear view mirror
I need it because after my eye surgery my peripheral vision in right eye is reduced and I occasionally get caught out by overtaking vehicles, I have to turn my head slightly to the right to get a full view in the “wing mirror “
I explained this to a leading (expensive) UK based reversing camera specialist and he suggested the twin camera set up because it’s a common need, there was no suggestion that it would be illegal, even pointing out that many HGV’s have them fitted operating “ permanently “ to give a rear view

You’re obviously a lot more savvy about vehicle electrics, Loot, I also want to fit a (Chinese) hard wire kit for my combined dashcam/satnav, there’s a YouTube video showing it being fitted to a custom with the live feed via the BCM Fuse Box using a “ piggyback “ connector but doesn’t clarify which fuse is used for an ignition controlled fuse, can you suggest appropriate fuses 1 for the dashcam and if possible another 1 for the reversing camera
Thanks in anticipation

I've fitted 2 reversing cameras and the monitor screen is in front of the tacho "slot". I ran my video and power feed to the screen up the drivers "A" pillar behind the headlining and into the tacho slot and to the monitor screen. It's not difficult to remove the items like the A pillar cover bits of the dash and cupholder etc. but it's very time consuming like any other consealed cable route but worth it in the end. I recommend purchasing a trim removal toolkit off of ebay. They are not expensive but save any damage to paintwork and trim.

Thanks dyadic
I’m not sure what the “tacho slot” is, I hope I’m not being thick
Mine is a 2017 Limited
The attached photos 1 shows the provisional position of The Garmin satnav/dashcam ( I may move it slightly to the right when the monitor is working, the monitor is a clip on to the mirror 4 pin hard wire
Photo 2 is a small storage slot ( I’ve removed the plastic liner to see what’s behind) can’t see any cables
Is photo 2 the “tacho slot”?
I’ve had the A pillars off several times, the YouTube video shows the cable run up the A pillar along the headlining and removal of trim to get to the BCM fusebox
I bought eBay item https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163462465908 trim removal kit, it was a very competitive price and has been very useful

I know it used to be illegal to have the screen permanently on in the UK, but I heard that it has now changed, and is allowed for rear view cameras, as it is a clear safety benefit.
Probably worth checking if you're worried about it
