Shock mounting

Please could someone shed some light on how on earth I remove the front shock mounting from my 89 transit mk3 100l

Obviously I have removed the nut but the aluminium mounting just won't budge its absolutely solid

I've hit it, pulled it, heated it, soaked it for days on end in penetrating oil.

The only way now I can see of removing it is to cut it off and then when I replace the shock replace it with a new one.

And that brings me to my next question,

Where can I find a replacement.

I did buy two from transitcentre Poland but they are smaller so must be for the rear.

Please help as I need to replace the shock ASAP

Have you removed the bottom out of the out of the steering knuckle and hitting the lug on the bottom of the strut or try a small two leg puller on the top

might just be easier to cut the nut off the top, a new one will come with the shock just try to miss the washer cause the new one wont come with that.

that one should be rite for you van ford only seem to list this one
ford part number 1141584 shock
alloy part on the top (retainer) 6159056
any decent motor factors will be able to cross refrence the part number and will almost certainly have one or be able to get one

my mistake i read it wrong.
support the van on axle stands on the front leaf spring mounts allowing the front beam axle to hang
keep the bottom shock bolt in put a scissor jack or bottle jack between the axle near the leaf spring and force the axle down and it should hopefully pull the shock out. spread the load with a plank of wood if you can so it doesn't bend anything.

Yes released bottom so shock just hanging from top, pulled and twisted from bottom but to no avail. Problem with using a puller is there is no lip on the retainer for the legs to go under.

OK thank you I will give that a go.

I am wondering if the alloy shock retainer has somehow bonded with the rubber mounting over time. I have tried to get a knife bade between the retainer and the rubber but it is so so tight.

To be honest I would rather just cut the retainer off and get a new one but have drawn a blank getting another.

These mk 3 vans are superb but I am realising that getting parts is getting more difficult year by year.

it is amazing what can get stuck if given enough time. i had an axle on a old van with a torsion bar style axle it was a hollow tube with a bushing made from some sort of plastic and bronze. it was seized up having been stood for 10 years i couldn't get it apart we had heat on it wrapped a winch cable around the trailing arm and attached the axle to the bed of a recovery truck and pulled it with the winch ( 16000lbs winch) nothing. in the end had to send it off to a company who is a specialist in these axles they have a jig made up that pulls with a hydraulic ram, i spoke to the guy on the phone he said it struggled to remove it he had to get it glowing red hot as well as pulling.
sometimes its just one of them things!
have you called a ford dealer they sometimes have old stock.
the mk3 vans are brilliant almost nothing electrical to go wrong.

Yes I'm really pleased with the van, just a little frustrated about the lack of spare parts, of course they do share many parts with the mk 4 and 5 which are easy to get hold of so not all doom and gloom.
Don't suppose you have any idea why the retainer is cast in this specified shape. What is the purpose of the pointy shaped lug? ( excuse the poor description)

i would imagine its to aid in locating the top mount. i think there is a cut out in the shock so it will only go in one way, but i guess it is just to speed up assembly when they were being built.
there is an arrow with a R and a arrow with an L and the corresponding arrow points towards the front of the van depending on left or right.

No sadly not yet,
Plenty around for the rear ( smaller slot for shock )
But will keep looking.

Yes thanks Matt, I saw it but unfortunately its just for the rear. That said maybe I'm able to drill a larger hole out to accommodate the front shock.
