Does Sikaflex 512 stick like s**t?

Postby wild camper » Sun Apr 14, 2019 9:49 pm

2017 Custom SWB
I’ve recently purchased a 6 watt solar panel from Aldi @ £24.99
It’s very low power but I only want it to top up a separate battery I use only for internal led lighting
I want to bond it to the roof without using the supplied self tapping screws
It weighs 2800g dims are 498 x 345 x 15mm, the contact area around the perimeter is only 30mm wide
I’ve read of one guy who used it to bond a home made roof box to the roof
Many people refer to “Sikaflex” but don’t quote the final number eg 512
Someone also mentioned Everbuild Stixall, does anyone have a recommendation of a product to bond an item to the exterior van roof?
And can it be removed without damaging the paintwork if needed?
Also on my Custom there’s a body coloured grommet in the centre of the roof, roughly above where the bulkhead was, it seems the ideal entry point for the solar panel cable
I’ve tried to force it out from the inside but it looks like I’ll destroy it getting it out, anyone got any tips on how to remove it
The objects taped to the roof in the photo are only temporary to check I’ve got clearance under the garage door

This will help you out regarding the existing roof fixing points - although this is for my Mk8...

Thank you all for your comments
It looks like I’ll have to drill a hole through the grommet and silicone seal the cable entry
I bought some EVO STIK STICKS LIKE SH*T from Screwfix, I ordered it online and collected it last night
The product name seemed appropriate and it had good reviews
I’ll let you know in 6 months if it’s still stuck on the roof

I know nothing about which glue to use, but on a VW forum find a nice idea to get the cable in without drilling holes.

* Glue the panel in the rear part of the roof
* Get the wire in the small space between roof and rear door
* Go down with the wire for some centimetres, in the space between pillar and rear door
* Get your wire in the plastic tube housing the original cables going to the rear door (plate lights and wiper)
* Get your wire into the van, together with the original electric wires of the vehicle
* Get your wire to your voltage regulator
