MK6 Grey Gear Linkage Cable

Postby James-B93 » Mon Jun 24, 2019 4:57 pm

So I bought a cheap eBay grey linkage cable for my SWB MK6 FWD a while back and it has failed on me. I should’ve known better however it got me out of the poo when I couldn’t quite justify the real deal.

It has now failed again completely, the locking mechanism is shot so I have been down to my local Vospers parts place to buy a replacement and have been quoted £225?!

This is far more than I can justify and as the van is my second vehicle it can wait until I find something a bit more manageable.

Does anyone have any dealers they would recommend that would have a grey shifter cable at a price less than £225? Happy to take a second hand one so long as it’s not done too many miles as the last thing I would want is to fit it and have it fail and run out of adjustment fairly quickly.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not being funny but how hard do you need to change gears? I know they stretch but damn

Mk6 selector bearings are known to seize aren't they? Maybe get another cable second hand and replace the selector bearing.

Should probably add I’ve already changed the selector bearing (which was shot) and the cheap cables have been known to not have enough adjustment on them even though they’re brand new...nothing to do with my gear changing I can promise you that much...

Should also add that the cables don’t stretch...they compress over time..it’s the compression that reduces the throw meaning you can’t quite reach 2nd or reverse eventually

Completely agree! The chap said it would be significantly cheaper but he no longer keeps the part on the shelf, could’ve got it next day but at that price it’s a last resort if I’m honest! Found one on a website called Transit Centre but don’t know whether to trust it or not, especially at £70
