Best grease/lubricant for the actuator

Postby ned » Wed Jun 26, 2019 9:16 am

What would be the best grease/lubricant to put on the moving parts of the turbo actuator, mine is sticking a wee bit I think, the van was down on power (well sort of) so last night I manually pushed the actuator rod in and out a few times, it's was a bit stiff at first and now moves freely, the result being my power is now restored :P so I'm just wondering if I grease it up it should stop it sticking in the future, my only concern is that the turbo gets bloody hot so I don't want to bake any grease on and cause future issues.

Many thanks good people of the world :D

In my experience, grease is useless on an external part that moves frequently, unless it's confined to always be in contact with that moving part, such as in a sealed bearing housing.
It simply gets pushed away from the rod or whatever it's supposed to lubricate, and stays away from the moving part until re-applied.

A spray lube, or a light oil, applied frequently, is the best you can do IMO :)

Mine turned out to be the stator/vane ring sticking at the far ends of travel. A squirt of oven cleaner and a good scrape out of the housing seems to have sorted it.

There is now a pronounced dump valve style 'whoosh' in 1st and 2nd just as it really starts pulling up on the boost - guessing that being a 140 it is torque limited in the bottom 2 gears as in 3rd it really hauls on some 8)

You would be inclined to think Ned that the actuator pin would be worn out and not seized with all the limp mode sessions

It was the lack of the dump valve sound that made me check the actuator, might have to have a good look at the turbo, vanes and actuator this weekend, I do miss the "kick up the arse" power before as Bambi said limp mode

Was there anything suspicious about the turbo, Ned? Did you pinpoint where the problem is?

Not really looked yet, I just put some 3in1 on the moving parts of the actuator as it felt a bit stiff, something isn't right though as I only see 20psi of boost (on the gauge) bit down from the 25 - 28 psi I was seeing :? Think the spinning clutch doesn't help   need to get that changed soon :(
