Changing or cleaning Oil Spray bar in Pinto engine

Postby vana mana » Fri Jul 12, 2019 7:12 am

Hi again
Is it easy to change the oil spray bar in a pinto engine?
I've read it's only 3 bolts
Do they need torquing back down or just tight then quarter turn?
Is it worth cleaning the spray bar with diesel or some other method or just fit new
I've also read about high flow oil spray bars
Anyone know who sells them?
I thought Burton Power would but looks just like a standard one.?
I pressume its best practise to fit a new rocker cover gasket to.?

Any help appreciated as usual

Thank you

If you have a torque wrench that goes that low then use it but from memory they are 10 mil spanner size the 1/4 of a turn is for the head bolts don’t clean it out fit a new one burton should be ok but back in the day Ford modified the spray bar when they wear killing the cams at the time the company I worked for we had over 100 vans and cars with a pinto and we only had one go and it was a second hand van they got all we did was service them every 5000 mls and run them on a good quality detergent oil and yes fit new gasket if it’s been on a long time

The Burton spray bar is fine, used them in tuned pinto engines.
Dead easy to change, 20 mins work, I don't know the torque values but just be sensible and nip them up well they don't need lots of torque.

Early spray bars were straight and sprayed oil horizontally on to each cam. If flow was restricted in any way the jet of oil completely missed the cams. Ford quickly modified it with risers on it so the oil was directed almost vertically above the cams, so even if there was low flow the oil would still hit the cam. I haven't seen the old design for years, so any you buy nowadays should do the job.
