Tyre pressure

Postby Bobeek » Fri Jul 12, 2019 8:13 am

Hi guys,
I've just fitted a set of custom wheels with 215/65R16 tyres on my swb medium roof mk7 camper..
what sort of pressure I should go for? I guess I can't really go wrong with the advised pressure of the custom? (55-52 psi)?

I'd think that's there or thereabouts, although you might want to play about with the pressures over time and see what's comfortable. I've a SWB 260 and a LWB 300, both on the same 15" wheels, but the stated pressures are 10PSI apart.
Drink moderately, eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway.

My first impression was (on a short test run) that they feel a bit bouncy/hard also easier to turn the steering wheel compare to the 195/75R15..I tried to google tyre pressures but found very various information..

That sounds like the pressure's too high. I was going to say if the steering's a bit light, drop the pressure. I also do it by eye. Look down from the top of the tyre. At the point of contact with the road, the tyre should belly out a little but not too much, if that makes sense. Similarly, look from the front and back of the van, there's an optimum shape for the part of the tyre in contact with the road.

Over time, typically a tyre will wear too much in the centre if the pressure's too high and too much on the shoulders if it's too low.

My handbook says, for a FWD Mk7:

260 with 205/65/16 tyres, 48PSI front & rear
280 with 205/65/16 tyres, 49PSI front, 51PSI rear
300 with 205/65/16 tyres, 55PSI front, 58PSI rear

What's your van?

the tyres are 215/65R16
the van is a 260s...swb medium roof converted to campervan.. I'd say the load in the back is medium to light..
