Mot and tax pre 1 January 1979

Postby loot » Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:18 pm

I've been looking but basically want to know what you've found, ideally I'd like a mk2 and to fit my own engine and box and electronics to it and so on, is there free road tax if I get 1 registered before the above date? What is the mot requirement? Have you had to change its class for exemption or whatever did you find out?
Cheers.

That's for mot, the vehicle needs to be 40 years old for tax and mot exception.

Can't see anything about modifications for tax though.

Some modifications are allowed, mainly to increase safety or to reduce pollution.
Any mods to increase performance means the vehicle has to have an MOT,even if exempt from tax.

Thanks, ok that's that out of the window but I don't mind as an mot is easy and 45 quid isn't much, neither is the tax versus maintenance but if the van was a rebuild project from the start and fully restored bodywork it'll be nice to have free tax 8)

So in other words it is a benefit to look for a mk2 that is registered before that date or wait until it becomes free, a 1982 van for eg might stay in the lair being restored and will then come into classic status?
