Mk 7 Gear Change Cable Issue

Postby flashgordon » Wed Sep 11, 2019 8:17 pm

Hi All,

I have a 2007 2.4 RWD twin wheel diesel tipper 5 speed.
A few days ago whilst driving through town, I suddenly couldn't engage any gears because the end of the gear change cable became disconnected, the one that connects to the heavy cast arm on the box. I have replaced the cables with new pattern part ones but noticed that when the new cable end was fitted to the ball of the cast arm of the box I could feel a fair bit of play in the connection, though I can't remove it by hand. Also, the ball end doesn't seem very prominent compared to the other ones.

It changes gear fine ...but I don't want it dropping off again..is this a common problem ? Any solutions or does it need a new arm ?

Any help appreciated.

We find the pattern part cables aren't very good....best to get genuine Ford items.

Okay thanks.

Was quoted about £184 for a set from Ford, but got these for less than £50 which I thought was a good saving, but now I know why !!

Unfortunately sometimes with our Transits.....when we buy cheap...it often means buy twice... :?

Keep an eye on eBay, I was quoted £185 from Ford also, however I eventually found a genuine one on eBay for £110

Thanks all,

I've just done a 60 mile trip with no issues so it's hanging on there okay.

The new cables look fine, it's just the play in that one joint, so I wondered if the ball on the cast iron arm had become worn due to the socket connector catching and holding dirty water and grit etc.

Has anyone ever cut off the existing cast ball and then drilled and fitted a new bigger ball stud onto the arm ? Just a thought as it would be cheaper than genuine cables !!
