Accident damage

Hi all I’m a new member
I have a 2001 (Y) mk6 transit, one door says t90 350 other says t330?
It’s 2.3 petrol (no gas) RWD 3170kg SWB low roof in pepper red
132k Has twin side load doors with windows, air con, electric heated mirrors and screen, CD player, rear parking sensors etc
I have ownd this van approx 10 years

On Sunday night my dads neighbor reversed into the drivers door!
He wants to go through his insurance
I’ve been told I need to take it 22miles to Sunderland for inspection/estimate On Thursday afternoon
Damage looks to be limited to the door only
My question would be what kind of repair will they do? (new door from ford)?£££? Or new skin or pull out and fill??
What value a insurance company would put on my van?
Is a write off situation possible?
(Financially better for me I’d buy it back and repair)
Thank you in advance for any reply,
Bobby

That is a nice van; twin sliders get everyone excited... and petrol... and RWD...

I wouldn't be surprised if they write it off because that is what insurance companies do on older vehicles... if they were gunna repair, they would probs get a new door and paint that instead of using loads of filler...

Given that one door says 350 and other says 330, means your van has had one of the doors replaced in the past. The current door that says 330 may well be the original door...

Are you sure you can't get your Dad to speak to his neighbour and try and reason with him? Going though insurance is gunna be a big headache... Pointless on older vans really... Does the other vehicle have any damage?

Hi thanks for the reply
I don’t think the guy has any cash too pay for repairs? Just said he’d have to use his insurance and said the same the next day ( I thought he might have changed has mind after sleeping in it) his car looked ok but it was a black car and dark at the time (also didn’t care about his motor)
I do plan to lightly kit out the inside as a bit of a day van for camping, like split charge, lights and electric, carpet line, curtains etc

The door with 330 on will be the original as they didn't put the engine ps on the door of the early mk6's

Your van will be wrote off by the insurance due to the cost of the door, paint and labour, it's a shame but you should be able to buy it back.

Take the door card off the inside and most of that sent will just push out.

As others have stated, the insurance company probably will write it off. Their criterion is to compare the cost of repair at an approved body shop using new Ford parts as a percentage of the van's market value. It's a simple calculation to them. What I'd do is price up a secondhand door and the cost of having it fitted and painted locally at an independent garage. Even better if you can find an undamaged door in the right colour. Then hit the insurance company with that. That way, they might not write it off and it will retain a slightly higher value if you ever come to sell it. Plus, it will have a 'clean' history: some people can be put off by insurance write-offs.
Drink moderately, eat healthily, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Another option is to get the Van repaired, you pay and claim back what you can from the insurance.

I did this last year and had my van back on the road in a week, the assessor rung me a couple of weeks later to say they would have written the van off and were only going to pay up to 60% of its value.

The cost of the repairs was £3500 and they were only going to pay £3410.

It depends on how much you want your van back?

My insurance broker told me this is the best way to do it.

Thanks for your replies, I’m taking the van in for estimates 4pm today and will let you know what happens? Most sites I’ve looked at say it will be written off if repair cost is 50-60% of value? I’d not sure what the van is worth maybe £1000 at best? So a estimate of £500 could do it? I know I can repair myself for a lot less and will do if it’s a total loss to the insurance.
I see what your saying about trying to keep it off the list (might already be on there as I think it’s had the other door changed at some point) but over 10 years ago, I’ll post later if there’s any developments.

Someone dented my door in exactly the same place but took off before I could get his registration.

I thought it might be a simple job.

However, when I removed the inner panel there is a metal strut in the way which stopped me from pushing the dent out.

It is still there!

I'm no insurance specialist, but an estimate of £500 for a repair like that sounds very unlikely I'm afraid. I would prepare to be disappointed...

So I’ve taken the van up to Sunderland for inspection / estimate (thought these assessors came out to you ?)
The guy said he thought my van was in “good nick” and that it would be a new door (about £485) and that with fitting and paint around £1500!!! He was going to type it up and send through to insurance and I should likely receive a cash part of offer,
watch this space for what happens next

Yeah so obviously it will end up being written off. If you dealt with it privately it would be a fraction of the cost lol

“On the boat”? Where’s that Ireland? Van has been to Ireland before (southern) I go over for a motorcycle rally in Killarney and have friends in Greystones
If there is a decent door in the right colour (pepper red) I’d be interested, even paying for a courier will be less than paying for paint? There’s plenty of doors on eBay for under £50 but white or blue
Thanks Bobby
