Unusual tyre wear

Postby thescotsman » Tue Nov 12, 2019 7:42 pm

Hello from Ireland. I have a 2016 transit custom that is eating the outside of the drivers side tyre excessively. The tracking centre says the van is tracking straight. I can’t find any play in the steering linkage or suspension bushings etc. I’ve only recently replaced this tyre so would like to get to the bottom of it before I replace it again only for the same thing to happen. Thanks in advance.

Not yet, life is keeping me busy but need to check again soon and do something about it. that’s my 3rd set on the rear and it’s the only time it’s happened

I went ahead and got 2 new front tyres in the end. They checked the tracking again and all was straight. The van has passed its DOE (MOT) since with no issues & seems to be wearing these tyres fine so I'm blaming the previous set of tyres for now, just seems very odd. I will know better as the mileage goes up on this set of tyres.

It’s pretty pointless doing tracking these days, you need a full geometry check. It’s very rare that a tyre will cause wear on one edge, so there’s something wrong with the suspension setup of your van, which is probably so slight that you won’t know about it until your new tyres are knackered.
