Glow plug light on dashboard came on and van conked out

Postby coffee_king » Mon Aug 19, 2019 9:30 am

Hi Guys
I was driving my 2005 Transit Connect on Saturday when suddenly the glow plug light on the dashboard came on and the van conked out.
I was able to safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road. I then turned everything off and back on again and luckily the van started back up again and I was able to continue to onwards with my journey.
Any ideas what occurred? Do I need to replace the glow plug/s?
Thanks in advance.

The cause of this for me was knackered injectors. Has the van been running ok lately? Any problems with lumpy running on cold starts?

Thanks for the reply. An auto electrician friend of mine ran his diagnostics tool on the van and said there was an error that replacing the CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR would fix.
Ive done that and the error has cleared now.

I have been told previously that an injector has probably gone on the van though as it sounds like its missing on tick over, but I was told it probably wasnt worth fixing when I was advised a few months ago.
So do you think this could still be an issue then?

No worries. To be honest, time will tell now. My injectors did not show up an error as such, so because injectors are rip-off expensive, i replaced the cam sensor to see if that would cure it, as this CAN also be a similar symptom, but it didn't fix my problem. By then we were more or less sure it was the injectors. I took the van to a diesel specialist, and they confirmed the injectors were all over the place and needed urgent replacement. Since replacing them for re-cons, starting and driving has been a pleasure once again - cold or hot.

All the best with this mate.

Thanks for your response, its much appreciated.
Whats the best case / worst case scenario here?
Glow plug light comes on again at some point during a drive, it conks out and I should always just be able to restart it, or it will just end up NOT being able to be restarted?

Sorry for the absence mate. IF yours is suffering with the same problem as mine had, then it WILL happen again, and the gaps between will become shorter. I just wanted it sorted, and knew it would only get worse. But is SHOULD continue to restart. My best advice by far would be to take it to a diesel specialist and have it diagnosed 100%. It will cost you for the diagnosis of course, but you will then know for certain what exactly is causing the cut outs. My money would err on the side of the injectors, as it sounds remarkably similar to my injector symptoms.
All the best mate! Sorry again for the radio silence

Cheers pal. I'll keep my eye on it for a while. It is running a bit rough and Ive been told previously (Over the phone) by an independent Ford specialist garage that no doubt an injector has gone.
Thanks for your advise.

My van conked out twice on the way home on Saturday night.
Luckily I was only an 8 minute drive in total away from home.
It conked out about 2 mins into the journey. There was a sudden bump type feeling (as if I'd run into something) and the engine stalled and the glow plug light on the dashboard started flashing.
I stopped the engine, restarted and continued on fine.
Then about 30 seconds later it happened again. Again I was able to continue on my way and made it home OK without any further incidents (About 5 mins to get home).
Any further thoughts anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Definitely sounds like injectors to me now still. Exactly the same symptoms as many others on here including me.

Just to update on this a little.
I took it into my local garage and was told it was showing an ERG valve fault.
I put a blanking plate on the ERG valve four years ago, but I've now removed it now, so will see how it goes and advise.

Incidentally it conked out twice on the way to the garage :)

More updates on this. While driving to work on Saturday night my van stalled once (Within a few mins of starting off from cold), the it DIDN'T stall again on the way to work (50 mins journey).
Then on the drive home at about 12am after driving for about 5 minutes the vehicle then stalled every 10 seconds or so for about 5 minutes solid, then it would be OK for a few minutes, then it would keep on stalling again.
I had a bottle of Cataclean on me that was suggested I should put in with the diesel when the tank got down to 1/4 full. So I did that, but that didnt help.
I basically limped home stalling off and on along the way.
I was going to pull in and call my breakdown recovery company but I thought sod it, I bet I can get it home (Plus the roads wernt that busy).
A few miles before getting home I pulled into a drive through fast food restaurant and then the vehicle also proceeded to stall while I was stationary / idleing, awaiting my food.

To note:
I FELT like if I kept it in 4th or 5th gear later on it SEEMED to stall less, but this could just be my imagination.
I haven't refilled the vehicle yet.
Its been suggested for me to replace the fuel filter but I literally only did this about 12-24 months ago.

So does anyone have any further thoughts on this now please?

Get the injectors tested by a diesel specialist.
