Yes, I did. BTW, doesn't intergalactic travel keep you busy, and away from your van? Unless...................... is it really a tardis?

Rust proofing a transit.

Postby baconsdozen » Thu Jun 09, 2005 10:15 am

Has any one ever had a gearbox or sump or even a back axle rust through from the inside?. Old engine oil mixed with a bit of detergent to make it sticky is a good cheap substitute for waxoyl to slow down rust.Note the slow it down comment, whatever you do you can't stop the steel in your chassis from going back to its natural state (ie) iron oxide
(rust) eventually.Bear in mind that if you leave one small bit un protected it will rust worse that if you do nothing at all so retreating every few months or so is a messy but worthwhile way of getting as much life as possible out of your old van.

How flammable is this? Come to think of it, how flammable is waxoil? Has anybody had to weld near the treated metal? Though I admit that welding and rust go hand in hand..............

Oh, that's not good is it, but at least it doesn't burst into flames!

Here's a few questions about waxoiling my new bus:

1. Should I do it asap or wait for dry weather?
2. My arches are rust free, but should I steam clean the crap out from behind them now, or just before waxoiling?
3. Do you recommend steam clean/pressure wash then wire brush?

Thanks, I'm sure Fred, Luke or Mark will jump over each other to talk more about waxoil!
