Outdoor air temperature sensor

Postby Smith008 » Wed Mar 25, 2020 5:10 pm

Hi there!

Our company where I work bought a 2017 Transit Custom which is front damaged. My colleague is rebuilding the front, all went quite well, only 1 fault left for now. The outdoor temperature sensor shows -40 °C on the dash which is... let's say not that accurate :D
He bought a new one, installed it, and now it shows +40 °C, which is again, not too accurate. Question: is it possible that 2 of 2 sensors are faulty? Both are factory parts, not aftermarket. What could be the problem? Calibration? Setting in the infotainment system? Teaching the sensor? I really don't know.
I didn't find anything on the internet, so this forum is my last idea to find an answer. Of course, he could take it to a service, but it would cost a lot more. If it's possible, he wants to do it without a service.

Thank you for your time and replies,

Regards,
David

Have you checked the harness for damage, good power and ground?. What voltage are you seeing at the sensor.

Have you got the air filter housing fitted, rather MAF sensor plugged in ?
Intercooler fitted, and it’s temp sensor plugged in ?

Everything is plugged in properly.
We tried with 2 sensors. If the car is in ignition, and I plug in the sensor, it starts rising from -40 °C to +46 °C. Today was a pretty cold day, only +3 °C. We ordered a 3rd sensor, to check if the first 2 are faulty or not, but I don't think that will be the problem.
The original sensor shows even higher temperatures, between +50 and +61 °C so it's abnormal.
The second one is 'only' +43 °C and +46 °C.
The harness doesn't seem to be damaged. Everything LOOKS untouched, this is a 34.000 km van. I know this means nothing, but the harness looks kinda new.

Thanks for the help!

-40 is a usual open circuit default setting.....
BUT,outside air temp is somehow linked to the air temp measure by the MAF sensor,
And the ACT sensor in the intercooler.
I suggest you also look at those,pref with datalogger/live data,and they’re wiring....

Our Transit doesn't have that ACT sensor.
My colleague said that he checked the wires and it's fine. Live data also showing -40 °C so I have no idea.

The previous owner said that he once disconnected this temperature sensor and plugged it back, he also had that -40-ish value, but after a day it slowly started to go down. This isn't happening to us.

Annoying little thing...

The 3rd sensor arrives tomorrow, we'll see. If the values remain the same, I'm sure it's the cable somehow.

Thanks for the help again, we'll check everything again!

So, we tested with the 3rd sensor. Same issue. When I plug in, it starts from -40, then slowly starts rising, until +46.
Live data also shows this value. I'll attach photos. MAF sensor is plugged in, everything checked.

Ok,so this is a 2.0 panther,ACT not in intercooler.
It will be combined with MAP sensor in the housing front of engine below air filter.
I’ve seen these get broken in an accident.
As before, look at IAT (MAF) and ACT (T-MAP) temp readings, before disturbing anything.....
Then check the connector, wiring and MAP sensor.

Any update on this issue? I have a 2018 ford tourneo custom which has just had a new re-man engine and i get -40 then it goes up to correct temp then back down again.
