Brake Disc Torque Bolts

I know these are meant to be replaced when removed and fitting new discs front and rear, but in the present given climate is it’s really a necessity? - can i reuse? - or am i looking for trouble ?

ah! are they not stretch bolts like used in engines and have 1 use lifespan ?

I have changed many disks over the years but never on the Custom (yet). I have always reused the bolts if they are in good condition of course.....
You have made me worry about that now!

I personally would go for it and then recheck the torque after 4-500 miles to be sure. It only requires slipping a wheel off to check..... but that’s just me.... if it’s similar to steel erecting then yes.... bolts are one use only. Please post back if you find this definitely to be the case as I will never reuse bolts again!

I wouldn’t be using thread lock on a serviceable part though! You’ll be swearing if you keep the van long enough to have another set!!

thanks for the help, was at ford today for an emergency repair and asked the question - thread lock was the answer and not stretch bolts

it’s not a straight forward job changing all 4 discs on the custom. however when ford charge you £550 just for the pads and you have 2 vans i’ll spend all week doing it myself

wow! Quite right!

That is a mental price! How can they justify that?!

but found some issues and only done one side !

So same issue both front discs inside, only centre of pad working

and both rear inside pads wearing down at an angle

all done now...

Did you have much grief getting the 36mm nut undone?

Also, did the disc and hub come off the hub carrier ok?

Yes, i have a 1m breaker bar and had the wheels on the ground and in gear.

Good rattle gun can help with the unthreading as that’s boring and long

Once all the torque bolts were out a think i had to tap the inside of the disc with a small lump hammer and i seem to remember using a metal chisel at times.

welll, here is a tail of two cities....

One side came apart fairly easily, hub nut yeilded to just my 3/4" breaker, and driveshaft knocked out with a lump hammer and alloy bar, but i think this is because of the root cause of the knocking that began last week - the disc was fractured down the middle of the cooling fins, and by the time i got it off the hub on the floor, it was in two pieces! I think when they changed the pads just before we bought it - they should have changed the discs too - and its been overheating on one side - so that side has got hot at some stage - maybe making it easier to remove??

The other side, was a total tw%$ to take apart. The van only has 40k miles, but the hub nut required much more persuading, 3/4" breaker bar, inside a scaffold pole and it broke free. But the driveshaft, would it come out, would it b@ll%c$s! After whacking seven shades out of my ally bar and the lump hammer, I set up an axle stand and a bigger lump of alloy and tried the sledge, still no joy. So I had to go get a large puller from my dads, and wind that on to it, which eventually with the help of impact breaker and pole finally got it out...
