Di fuel pump (belt failier)

Postby bortaf » Sat Nov 26, 2005 4:40 pm

Right need some advice on me Di, the cam belt went this morning and the fuel pump seems to be seized wont turn more than a few inches either way, is this correct or has the pump gone?, turning it by hand that is. Checked the belt and that looks fine appart from the rip where the belt has broken, not sure what millage it's done probably 30,000 max.
Before you ask it's running normal pump diesel (filled it up last night when i passed a tesco fuel station with derv at 88p per litre :D )
When i started it this morning it was reluctant to rev i had to have my foot flat to the floor to get it to pick up above idle and it was smoking a litlte bit (white not black) then the metalic sound of valves hitting pistons and the belt fell into the road

I'm not famlilair with your Tranny m8, so bear with me.

If it's the bosch pump, your not going to turn it by hand more than about 1" in each direction without a spanner/socket.

As you rotate the pump you should feel 4 real tight spots, thates when the important bits of the pressure generation are happening.

If you are unsure as to the pumps internal condition, remove the banjo bolt from the return pipe...thats the plstic pipe at the top of the pump at the back, that banjo screws into a restrictor (again it's a 17mm spanner job) once thats out you'll see a small hole on one side and a filter on the other.

Find a clean area and tap the filter side of the restrictor on the clean bit, if you get lots of metal and bits of black plastic, the pump is less than perfect interally... . it is OK to have some v.small bits.

30k isn't much for the belt, if it's failed i'd suspect overtightening or oil/water contamination at some point.

Will you be sticking it back together with the latest auto tensioner?

Don't worry about the smoke just yet, it sounds like the belt had jumped a few teeth before it snapped giving retarded fuel timing.

The push rods will have saved most of the damage, but be sure to check the rocker arms as they can distort. Shouldn't be any need to have the head off though :D

Bad Luck Mate! :(

Once you have inspected the top end for damage, you may or may not be able to see any......if you cant see any then before you strip it down it may be worth putting a new belt on, and turning the engine by hand(socket n ratchet/spanner) to check first.

I dont honestly know the details of why, but some snapped belts on DIs dont result in engine damage, in my experience its about 50/50.

Perhaps Nighthawk could shed some light on it??

Valve to Piston contact isn't that bad on these old work horses.

But something has to give, the best ase scenario is a very very slight bend in some of the push rods, worst case is all the push rods are bent like an "S" and the rocker arms have cracked or twisted.

There will be witness marks on the piston crowns, but they don't crack to tops like some other engines.

My adivice, replace the belt and tensioner, whip off the rocker shaft and check all 8 rods, then while the shafts off, spin all the rockers and push them sidewaysagainst the springs. Any bind needs to be inspected

during the build up, set the valve clearences and away you go

Bad luck on the belt, when ours went on the newgen on the way to dover (thankfully in the UK) the result was only 3 bent pushrods so felt that we got off light.

Still, diesel is cheap up your way! Might nip round with the big un and fill both tanks!
