Whats the law on wheelarch ofset?

Whats the law on wheel overhang!!! my rear wheels again............................................ :roll:
with my new wheels fitted using adapters they will stick outside the arches but are inside the body line! :?

as illustrated in this accurate and to scale drawing!!! :lol:

so the wheel will be further out than the arch but the body work will be further out than the wheel!!! :?

what i need to know is, is this legal (UK mot) :?:
no yes guess's please :? i dont want to have the adapters made to find out its not legal!!! :lol:

PROTRUDING WHEELS
I have recently purchased a set of alloy wheels from [a retailer] for my Ford Focus ST170 [who in turn fitted them to my car].
They appeared to be look a wider fitment than the original standard wheel even though they were the same size, 215/45/17, and were visibly protruding beyond the wheel arch on the front by approximately 5-6mm. They have also been catching the wheel arches on the front when going over speed ramps or bigger bumps in the road.
A local MOT Testing Station could not clarify whether this protrusion was classed as illegal so I would hope you could provide clarification? Steven Jewitt
As I understand the situation the only way the MOT is affected is if your new wheels actually foul the bodywork or any other part of the vehicle when the wheels are turned lock to lock when the vehicle is sitting in its normal position.
Remember too that your vehicle has to comply with 'construction and use' regulations which are not necessarily the same as the regulations regarding the MOT. Unfortunately we are unable to assist you with respect to those requirements. -MOTT

got a feeling it's one of those "down to the officer who pulled you" type questions that you get with grey areas of the law :(

:lol: Like bortaf says luke prob down to your local plod :roll: I know some lads who run rods without any mudguards, I think as long as you cant see any tread outside the body you should be ok :roll: Ive seen plenty of twin wheeler tipper type pickups without mudguards at all on the back :shock:

Yeah, it's normally only the tread that has to be covered by the wheelarch, though a friend of mine's car was deemed "unsafe" as the wheels were sticking out and were considered a danger to cyclists!

The law though is definately that the tread must be covered and the wheels must not foul anything at any point of lock or suspension travel....
