mkII vs mk3 Twin wheel back axles

Anyone know the differences in these, apart from the obvious width discrepancy ?

Here is what i do know,

1) mkII wider by about 2 inches
2) Spring and shock mountings seem the same and are in the same place
3) Diffs are interchangeable
4) Brakes and Drums are listed upto 85 and 86 on
5) Wheel Bearings the same, listed upto 85 and 86 on
6) load aportioning vavle fitting the same although is different arm and fitting on van and different hose fittings after valve.

Just wondering which bits i can interchange

the end float for the main spigot bearing is factory set for these axles, using a solid washer, however all other axles (singles) have collapsable washer, you might need to use one of these if you change bearings

Some of our Mk2s have a complete Mk3 rear axle, and one of them has the load sensing valve to match. The brake pipes are slightly different, but other than that there is very little else to do. The load sensing valve is a different shape, so needs a new bracket and also needs new brake pipes, other than that there is no operational difference in any of the parts. The best way I have found to tell the difference between the two when off the donors is that the Mk3s have green brake pipes. Hope this helps

yeah ... it was was a little help, its more the interchangeability of stuff like the drums .... mine all have different part numbers on them and its a real mine field trying to back trace stuff ... i have some good mk3 ones all shot blasted and sprayed, and some mkII ones that i havent even tried spliting from the hubs yet ... and one eye on a pair on ebay

also i have mk3 inner seals, mkII bearing kits (complete) and a full diff bearing kit which should be good for either ... and mk3 shoes and cylinders (need to check those as they came with only short bleed valves) mkII (i think) brake spring kit

so as you can see its a bit of a mix and match .... not as much as it nearly ended up being ... i had my eyes on a 95'ish pickup rear axle but decided it was just too wide

i hope you dont end up haveing a hissssssssssssing noise from your axle ! mine has done it since i got it ,i have even had a new crownwheel and pinion and bearings etc and its still makes a noise (no its not the prop centre bareing) but at least i can now get 60mph down hill instead of 50 mph!

hissing i can live with .... the loud whine and constant clank whenever i changed gear was getting a little tedious ....oh and 50 mph downhill ... i know exactly what you mean, why you think i'm changing it ... and went for the petrol rear Diff !!

hopefully with a good diff (and the new one seems ok) and full bearing replacement throughout, it should be good for a few years before i hear a peep out of it .....

i will be drilling a hole somewhere in the bottom of it and fitting a drain plug, so i can drain it without having to crack the back plate

Drain hole, back plate wherever! You know transits, they come out of the factory with a leaky diff!

All i know is Mk3's have 2 different size rear bearings, and it's allways the wronge ones the parts shop give you first

hhhhhhmmmmm interesting .... maybe an overspill of mkII hubs used on early mk3's ...... will have to check the part numbers or internal dimensions of the 2 when i get the mkII axle apart ...... but i think as i have mkII bearings, i think i will stick with the hubs for that version

you would of thourt that all these years the same firm have been makeing the axle for ford by now they would off found a better suplier 40 years of wineing axles is abit of a joke!

Better than the last box, that seized doing 60 luckaly the recovery was empty at the time but boy you should have seen those 4 black lines on the A2
