Changing a Tipper Transit into a Tow Trailer

Postby RayTrans » Wed Oct 14, 2020 9:22 pm

Hi all, my question is has anyone cut the cab off a Tipper Transit & welded an A-Frame onto it, so it can be towed by a Car, Van or Jeep. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.

Not quite sure what you mean, welding to the chassis minus cab? What are you trying to achieve?

I'm guessing to make a tipper trailer?

I have thought about doing it to go behind my tractor for moving wood/soil etc around.

It would be very nose heavy for a car though?

I can buy a Tipper Transit but the engine has been taking out of it, so all that is left is the cab & tipping bed. What I was thinking of doing is cutting off the cab/seating area so all that is left is the tipping bed minus the cab & engine. I than will weld on what is known as an a-frame with a tow hitch with brakes & a hand brake, so now I have a Tipping Trailer with an electric motor that I can power off my Transit trailer plug. I feel I could have a tipping trailer for very small money. I was just wondering had anyone else do this & what are the pit falls while doing my conversion. Thanks a Million Cheers

First thing that springs to mind is the weight of the finished trailer.
Assuming you are using a twinwheel chassis, it's going to be a seriously heave beast with a lot of nose weight.
You might be better off fitting the tipper mechanism and bed to a lighter 4 wheel chassis trailer?

Keef you might be onto something there, as I have an olde double axel caravan trailer parked up at the rear of the shed , but has a aluminum chassis, but the 2 axel could be welded onto the Transit tipping bed.

I did this with a mk2 dual wheel flat deck 20 years ago. It has a aluminum tray on it about 2.4 meters wide and 3 meters long. The cab went on another mk2 I had. Just cut it off behind the cab and weld on a A frame .I even used bit of Unimog chasie to mount the brake hitch etc. It is a lovely trailer and towes really well behind my Mk5 Turbo, have done thousands of kms with it
It does rock sideways a bit but it' took 2 Rollsroyce C6 diesel motors ok
