well im glad to say that these will be the last updates on this project hopefully.....im seeing it to the end this time,...all other work will simply have to wait!!...crazy to think its painted almost 2 and a half years and still not on the road!

ive gotten well stuck into getting the last few bits done over the last week or so.....

with the axle and springs away for blasting, i got all the led lights fitted on the body and wired up..

Image

Image

also got the towing plug fitted just over the level of the light panel so its out of harms way when the detachable towbar isnt fitted.

Image

i got the air suspension wired up and most of the pipe work done...i had already fitted control switches and a pressure gauge when i was fitting the dash, and had ran the wires back under the cab mat...

Image

Image

the air compressor fitted pretty neatly in a corner of the side box.....

Image

Image

speaking of boxes,...i had this electrical junction box kicking around, which worked out well to house all the air suspension bits,...relays..(to take the strain off the ebay dash switches!!)....and the bleed off valve etc.....
it should keep the elements away when the cover is fitted...

Image

Image

so apart from getting a fitting to hook up the pressure gauge pipe ive ran out from the dash, thats the air suspension sorted hopefully...

Image

next i set about mounting the side exit two box exhaust i had kept aside from a mk4 luton body breaker....its in good nick, and should work out fine....

Image

Image

thats as far as ive got, but the list of jobs to be done is getting smaller at last!

Image

Image

next update coming soon all going well!! :D

well, im closing in well on getting her wrapped up at this stage....got a few more loose ends tied up on my last few days off!!

got the inside of the cab totally finished...

ive robbed a set of svo seats in good nick from a mk3 minibus project i have sitting, that ill be converting to a van at some stage...ill have more freedom and room to fit later seats or whatever into that when the time comes.

i think they finish off the cab of the recovery nicely, and its useful to have the original fitment with the double passenger seat tilting forward to gain access in the cab..

i had ran the extra 2 speaker wires back before i fitted the floor mat, as the wee kick panel speakers werent going to cut it! i decided to fit a pair of speakers at an angle under the double seat in an old piece of mdf shelving i had kicking about..

Image

Image

seats and belts all in for good this time!

Image

i had also fitted a rear view mirror with built in reversing camera monitor from good old ebay, and had also ran its cable back with the speaker and air suspension wiring. so i got it through the bulkhead and back along the chassis to get a camera mounted up...

i knocked up this wee stainless bracket when i decided on the best place to mount the camera....

Image

Image

Image

and after a bit of delicate wiring and soldering on the very light camera wiring, all was good inside in the cab!! will be a help for parking and reversing anyway.....

Image

i was also lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of genuine front mk3 mudflaps a while back which are a nice touch!

Image

Image

i got my axle back from blasting as well...

next job is to get it back in and built up with new brakes etc...

Image

not long to go now hopefully!

got another couple of good days at this again last week...im glad to say the list of remaining jobs keeps getting smaller!!

got the axle fitted after getting a lick of paint, and got the brakes built up...

i was delighted and thankfull to have got a couple of donations of nos genuine ford brake parts from mates who saved them from the skip of main dealers that were closing down in the past.

theres great satisfaction in fitting genuine parts to a project, so seeing as i had new genuine brake cylinders and shoes, i treated her to a pair of new drums and handbrake cables also, which came very reasonably on ebay!

Image

i got the air suspension plumbing finished and tested once the axle and bags went in permantely..

Image

the air bag kit came with just a simple air line tyre valve and gauge on the feed pipe which i didnt use as ive a onboard compressor fitted along with switches on the dash to control the setup...

but i decided to put it to use it as an emergency measure and teed it into the outlet feed to the bags,.....so i mounted it in the side box also, so the bags could be pumped up or deflated with an airline if the compressor ever packs up or anything else goes wrong on the road!

Image

also got the rear mudguards fitted that i had kept from the same breaker that the exhaust system came off...i had already welded mounting bars onto the body before it was dipped but still had to finalise the height they would be fitted at to allow for suspension travel..

Image

still have to fit a pair of rubber mudflaps to them......

Image

for the ramp tray, instead of fitting aluminum chequer plate or the likes, i used a bit of 12mm recycled plastic sheeting.....should be less noise and rattling from the ramps sitting on that hopefully...

Image

Image

last bit of progress i made was making a start on sheeting the body...there were several layers of crappy paint on the aluminum chequer plate that came on the body...only simple way to get it off was a good coat of paint stripper left for a couple of hours and the cup wire brush in the angle grinder...a slow job but worth doing as the bed will look a bit fresher, and i didnt fancy forking out a few hundred quid for new sheeting!!

got the first section in place and the winch bolted down for good....getting ever so close now!!

Image

till next time!!

well, at long last....this is the post ive been looking forward to for a while now!!!

shes finished!!...got stuck into it in a big way leading up to christmas and finally got all the loose ends tied up...forgot to take many pics but ill share what i have...

got the mudflaps fitted to the rear mudguards.....

Image

i got the spare wheel up into place with the mk5 cable hanger setup i had mocked up previously....also added a chain and padlock, more as a safety measure in case the cable ever broke, leaving the spare to go in the path of the rear wheels rather than a theft deterrent!!

Image

Image

and after seeing a few close calls with ramps nearly falling off wagons over the years, i made up a spring loaded hold down handle just to be sure...it would take a lot for them to hop out of place , but better to be safe than sorry i figured!

Image

Image

Image

and after getting her tracked up and doing the last few wee jobs, i got her for a good spin and im well happy with how its driving...ive only carried one motor on it yet, but the air suspension seems to be a good job...

so here she is now, more or less ready for work!! just to get a few miles on her to bed in the new brakes and then shes going in for test...ive already got an engineers report on account of the new chassis etc, and she got the green light for that part!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

great to have her finally ready to hit the road!!
