Dodgy 200ps

Postby STEVE P » Tue Jan 12, 2021 12:18 am

A friend had been to look at a 2011 200ps , all looked OK on first impressions but it turns out it left the factory with a 4 pot up front and has been modified by one of the previous owners.

On a test drive it appears to all be OK but he has worries.

Who ever has done the work has used the correct front bumper and there is nothing obvious that a conversion has been done.

The van is showing 158k but the engine has done about 50k less apparently,

There is no paper work other the V5 and some receipts for some new brakes and and a service in the last few months.

The present owner is selling it as he is getting a free van with his job so is surplus to requirements.

I have said if he can get it for the right price to go for it but he is not sure, he has been after a 200ps for ages and they seem to getting hard to find.

Should he get it or be patient?

So it originally had a 2.2 in it?

Has the engine change been registered in the logbook or has the previous owner been driving around a 3.2 with 2.2 insurance?

Was it advertised solely as a 200ps or did it say 2.2 transit with 3.2 engine transplant? Just trying to work out what kind of seller you are dealing with...

It would of been a 2.4 originally RWD pre 2012
The tell tale will be the extension made to the chassis legs between the end of the leg and the bumper support cross member.
4pots are about 3" shorter and mounts are inline with the front light surround panel. The 5pot are further forward obviously.

I'd be VERY dubious about the milage.
Most transplants I've heard of have been from ambulances as they seem to be the most commonly available source and they are usually moon miles unless it has an engine replacement prior to being used as a donor.

What size van is it in?
Has he tried asking about insurance for it if it's not what it appears?
It'd have to be very cheap if it's history can't be proven.

It is a medium length low roof.

He reckons the engine bay looks factory so I wonder if the person converting had a 200ps to rob the parts from? I had thought about the ambulance.

The V5 says 3.2. so the paperwork has been done.

It is £4k and he reckons it looks very tydy with no dents, knocks or rust. Apparently even the AC works.

You can check the reg or vin no. on etis to see what it came from factory as.

Hmm that is odd, the ETIS reckons it is red but he said it is white. I will ring him later to confirm the colour, it also left the factory with a 2.4 engine so that confirms that side. If you were going to ring a van surly you would keep the colour the same?

It could well of been a genuine engine swap/conversion from a 3.2 something, I'd be more interested to see if vin/reg No.s tie up, and if it says it's a van or some sort of chassis variant.

I would hazard a guess that the seller didn't like your questions, so will try and find someone who doesn't ask so many  :P

Yes I thought the same, I guess the seller is hoping to find a quick sale. His search goes on. Anyone know of a 200ps that is for sale, no lwb or silly mileages.

Ahhahahaha
Be very hard pushed to find any genuine ones with one or other of those criteria but both I reckon is going to be a push.
Though I do know of a genuine 3.2 MWB medium roof, although I doubt very much that that one would be for sale

He's just going to have to keep looking. And maybe a little less picky mine was certainly not very "flash" when I got it. But it is bloody brilliant

Ah, but that's agent orange, and I've heard of others done similarly. But don't think there's a 3.2 SWB from factory?

Indeed there isn't, hence why it's ultra rare :P  8)

I fancy doing my conversion with the 3.2 on a SWB but really trick it out for off road playing not many of those about
