Thanks Nordic Blue. It’s been emotional

Now trying to get to the bottom of the new knocking noise that decided to show itself on the way to the MOT. Contenders so far include CV joint, PAS pump and the new tie rod ends. Put a video of the noise at the end of the Sound Diagnosis thread I started if anyone fancies a listen https://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=201432

I’ve had a knocking coming from inside the struts/ shock absorbers before used to change loads on Astra vans and my mk6 with genuine Ford ones did it from not a lot of miles when they came out of warranty they had no play in them and went through mot loads of time it was just annoying.

That’s a new one to add but possible with all the hitting of a lump hammer they’ve had - changing ball joints and the tie rod ends. Any way of telling it apart from other possible causes?

If you have knocking when you rock the steering when stood then I’d be looking at steering/ ball joints but if it’s when driving in a straight line and it’s coming from potholes then maybe in the leg or the rubber top mount maybe from the advisory from wheel bearing if same side .

No knocking in steering when stationary and no knocking caused by potholes, speed bumps, curbs or electric scooters. It’s had recent ball joins, drop links and control arms & bushes.

Seemed unlikely but i’m more and more thinking it could be the CV joint but puzzled because the gaitor isn’t broken and it didn’t make ANY noise before being stood still for 2 months. But now it does as soon as it’s moved? Who knows. Might find some expanding foam and newspaper inside the joint the way this van has been. Only other culprit I can think of is the PAS pump but i haven’t had that or a CV joint go on me before so I don’t know what they sound like.

You tend to hear cv joints click when turning slow in lock .if you bounce the front surspention can you make it knock what makes me think of the strut is on mot they didn’t find anything. My brothers Doblo had slight play in n/s/ bearing and he had a knock had new bearings and he thinks it’s gone .

My PAS pump is on its way out, you’ll know when they go as the steering becomes very notchy and sounds like there’s a chaffinch in the engine.

CV tend to clunk on turning as dumper said.

The knocking could be the strut top plates or the bearing with play in it, have you checked the hub nut is tight?

Checking the hub nut is a good shout anyway so I’ll do that tomorrow. Just going to Google what a chaffinch sounds like  Interestingly just check the MOT sheet and bearing play isn’t on there so I don’t know. I can get the front on stand and check for bearing play. While I’m at it is there any safe way to check/replicate the click of a CV gone? It’s just really strange it’s suddenly happened after months of nothing and no problems before. All I’ve done in that area is have it jacked up on the subframe for welding access, replacing the tie rod ends and changing the ABS sensor I clipped with an angle grinder.

Just drive it in a circle in both locks the more lock you put on the more it should click .

Sounds like CV joints then. Clicks always when taking a left or right turn at slow speed and when moving off from the lights. Have to be super slow and gentle for it not to click so much. Here’s the link to the video of the noise it’s making in case anyone can’t find it in the other thread: https://youtu.be/-2ywonblfEE. Would be good for a few more confirmations before I shed out on new driveshafts.

You should be able to get outer cv joints and not a full shaft it’s not often that the inner one goes unless the boot has been split for a long time and lost all the grease.

Outer cvs are about £50 iirc, I have a new one to go on the n/s but as usually I’m procrastinating on doing the relatively easy job.

Not listened to the video yet but what you describe sounds similar to mine, clicking on turning and clunking when pulling off from a stand still.

I'm seeing whole driveshafts for £50-80 each and I've already got some new gearbox oil seals and intermediate bearing clamp so will probably go down that route unless someone tells me it's too much hassle popping them out of the diff.
