1.8 tdci turbo blades worn and power increase

Postby masterslamma » Fri Jan 15, 2021 5:44 pm

Dear all,

i just bougth a 2003 90hp connect camper with 200k miles.

The car smokes very badly ss soon as you apply the throttle.
Pre owner said it would be the head gasket, but i do not think so.

I think its either way egr or the turbo.
I removed the whole egr system, sawed away the connections and closed them by tig welding. This is like the delete with the block of plate but this way i will get rid of this sh*t sytem and dont have to see it anymore.
I will test tomorrow if its still smokes.

The turbo has no radial play and maybe 0.3mm (just guesset) axial play. You can turn it nice and smooth.
But the blades are pretty worn because the intake pike was split.
Do you think this will need a refurb or can it still be driven like this?

Also i would like to remap it for more power. Can i do this myself and if so where to get a good map?

Are there any other eas, cheap upgrades? I read Focus airbox, i will get one of those.
Can you turn up the boost without a remap?

Thank you in advance

Regards

If that much foreign media has gone through the turbo is whip out the lambda sensor and see if the exhaust is wet with oil inside.

Id be looking at changing that turbo

Thats a good idea for a fast and easy check. I will chexk this.

Thank you.

Other question are there any power gains from removing that little turbo muffler with a straight pipe? I mean that plastic muffler that reduces the turbo sound, not the exhaust muffler.

Good idea normally mate, but provided that the OP's van has a TDCi engine, these do not have a lambda sensor in the exhaust on the early mk 1's. I have a de-cat pipe on mine, so I have examined the system thoroughly, and it does not have a sensor. Just FYI.

I admit my connect knowledge is limited. I assumed they a sensor.

Good info to have though! Thanks.

No worries mate, likewise, just passing on first hand knowledge

So i now blanket the EGR. I think it smokes less now but it is still whay to much smoke comming out.

The injector have been rebuild by the pre owner just before i bought it for 400£ bill is includet.

So whats the best way to find the reason?

I guess it could be relatwt to:

Turbo
Headgasket
Glowplugs

Anything else.

I also thinks it gets better when it warms up, but today was no wind and after 2mins of running i had to shut it off because in a circle of 50m arround the car there was deep fog now. Lots of neighbours where looking angry already.

Mine does the same ticking over when cold. I have changed the injectors, glow plugs, and turbo. Still the same - especially in winter. Not quite such a cloud, but it does accumulate a lot of blue/grey smoke. I doubt its the head gasket. Is it using a lot of oil? Mine has never drank oil, and to be honest, doesn't seem to use any more than normal, and doesn't need topping up much between changes! I have put it down to something to do with the inlet and egr system. The van runs sweet as a nut. Especially when warm, and does not smoke. Except occasionally under light acceleration, but even then, its only slight. It does get its legs stretched every time I drive it - not thrashed, but driven 'properly' for an oil burner  I would replace that turbo though, as the impellers do look very worn. Good luck pal, and keep the thread updated! All the best,

Hi,

today i chaneged the glow plugs. But unfortunately its not better.

When cold i smokes already and gets more when warmed up. The smoke is white and smells like diesel.

Might have something to do with the injectors or the rebuild of them that the pre owner did.

If its the turbo, is burnt oil turbo smoke white or black?

Oil burning is blue usually.
A diesel smell in the exhaust could be a leaking injector. This causes unburnt diesel to get in the exhaust.

Have a smell of the dip stick. See if it smells of diesel.

If it does it's gives you a good idea of a leaking injector.

Hello,

just to finish this thread, in the last weeks i check so much but did not find the problem till yesterday.

No engine fault codes
Egr deleted
Injector testet
Compression is there, but only 15bar on all cylinders
.
.

Yesterday i checked the camshaft timing, and it is out by minimum two teeth. Ordered new camshaft belt kit and will fit next weekend.

But i think this is the problem, bad timing, less air, less compression, bad burning, lots of smoke. Makes sense to me, i hope this is the problem, then its a cheap fix.

So i changed the timing belt i ran better immediately but still smoked a lot, but after 5miles of driving when it got hot the smoking went away.
Now everyrhing is fine

Good to read that you managed to get it resolved. It gives me a few pointers in the right direction of things to do to improve mine
