2.2 Rwd Head off ..now what?

Postby jmartin1800 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 12:16 pm

Hi all, first my earlier post..

"""Hi All,
first time poster but long time browser, are the 2.2 engines of different power interchangeable ?
I have a 155hp that cut out whilst driving ,the AA spent about an hour trying to get it started to no avail,it turned over with white smoke but never started, and my local Mechanic recons it needs a new engine, he did a compression check
and recommended the best option was a replacement.""

Since then I have gotten the van back home and started working on it ...
So far ...
4 injectors checked ..all 4 need replacing
3 glow plugs also bad
I eventually with lots of swearing and cut hands got the head off to see if there was any damage to the pistons
They actually look ok to me no cracks or holes , no 1 piston though has approx 1mm movement in the cylinder
Is that normal?

so I guess what I'm asking is what my next steps should be?
I'll add a few photos of the pistons when I get home this evening
Cheers.

Did the AA guy actually say what the issue was.?? Just saying you need a new engine is a cop-out without specifics. Was the compression actually low??

What does the cyl head look like underneath.?? That piston movement is a tad strange but without actually measuring things properly, you can really tell what's going on.

The AA at the time guy suggested the injectors(which did in fact turn out to be bad) ,the Mechanic was the one who said it was down on compression and I needed a new engine(...which is why I took the head off to check for piston damage) I'll post a pic of underside of the head tomorrow ,cheers.

An over fuelling injector has been known to blow a hole in a piston on these engines, but yours look to be OK :?

It looks like you found your problem, now the question is what is causing your piston to wobble about in the bore like that?

Here's a shot of the underside of the head,, to my admittedly untrained eye all seems OK?

the bores are actually all quite clean , you can still see the original cross hatch marks

I was thinking if the bore has that rust on it there is an issue - the rings would get rid of that extremely quickly.... and residual oil in the bores should stop it going like that for at least a week or 2
