Mk7 2.2 RWD jumbo nightmare

Postby womble171 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:55 am

Morning guys.

Had a mare of a time with my mk7 62plate 2.2 rwd jumbo yesterday!

was on M62 heading up to Leeds when it conked out in middle lane. Managed to get over to hard shoulder and called RAC. After an hour or so, guy turns up an says it cant be fixed at roadside....didnt even try! An hour later a recovery truck turns up an says its too big to recover. Had to pay an independant to come an get me to the tune of £400!!

No warning signs or lights on dash, just lost power. All fluid levels checked before i set off, so not ran dry or anything.
Cant seem to turn the crank by hand, but want to rule out seized alternator before i cry some more.

How do you remove aux belt on 2.2 rwd? On my 2.4 it was just a bar straight into tensioner pulley, but this looks a different set up?

Secondly, what could cause the engine just to seize, or pack up out of the blue? Only code im getting on forscan is glow plug 3 fault, but ive had that since i got the van.

Any advice greatly appreciated as always....

Update...

Took the aux belt off and everything free except crank pulley. Guess I'm looking at a new engine?
Anyone know and good source for engines, and does anyone know probable cause for the seizure?
I'm gonna whip the fuel filter off to see if there is any glitter in it.

Glitter would be in your oil filter,
Have you checked the timing chain hasn't snapped

Took the casing off earlier and timing chain seems good.

I can get a bit of movement if I get a socket on cams, but crank is solid an won't budge.

Probably thrown a rod or torn piston and/or bearing.....no holes in the block..??

I may be wrong, but aren't these Euro5 2.2 engines prone to oil pump failure :?: :?

I believe you are correct Sir. Mostly the FWD's though wasn't it...??

Block appears good with no holes. I can see the oil pump on the chain, but I guess its not just a case of replacing that? Is there any way to test to see if it was the oil pump that has failed, at least I'll know what the cause was?

Big end and main bearings along with the bores will have suffered first if the oil pump has failed. Most of the puma engines also have oil jets which squirt oil into the underside of the pistons and onto the bores.

Trouble is you can't get at the bottom end easily with the engine in the van. Ford in their wisdom decided to fit a "mid sump" stiffener plate to them which makes it rather difficult to get at all the gubbins in the bottom end from underneath.

Might pay to check the cam bearing journals for stupid amounts of wear too, I suspect they don't like it when there's no oil about.

It's also possible that the oil pick-up in the sump has been blocked with crud....not unheard of....that would give similar symptoms to a failed oil pump methinks.

I'd be investigating what exactly has happened first....if the damage is only minor, it may be a relatively easy fix. If major damage is found, an exchange or recon engine may be the way to go.

Is there anything else I could check for without having to take engine out?

I've not got the equipment to take it out unfortunately .

In the event of no oil, I would think that the turbo would have failed fairly quickly, so you could check and see if there's a lot of float in the bearing

If the turbo is OK, it's possible that the engine may not be as bad as we think :)

Managed to get out and have another tinker.

The turbo has got a bit of play in, but impellers seem intact.

However, I can't say the same for bottom end! I managed to get the sump off, well of enough so I can have a look inside. I'm no master mechanic, but I'm pretty sure there is not supposed to be bits of metal in there? Feels like a gravel pit at the bottom!!

Various ways to go but none are cheap , low miles 35k engine with everything including turbo and injectors would be best option but not cheapImage
