Mk6 transmission oil replacement query

Hi I have a Mk6 Ford transit

It has about 125k miles on the clock

Recently 2nd gear started to pop out every now and then and also has some grinding noises

If I bleed and change the transmission oil will this make any difference to this issue?

Or is it more likely a worn out synchro

will changing the transmission oil help ?


Also a rough estimates on how much a worn 2nd gear synchro is to replace?

Hi is 5speed front wheel drive


Issue is only with second gear and not that often might just be bad driving on my part but it is grinding more and popping out of second every now and then


Do you thinks it’s gonna be a good thing to change the transmission oil. (Been reading all these stories online about changing and flushing oil can cause more issues to a transmission on its last legs)

Before you blame the box itself, I would check the condition of the selector bearing, and also the cables, either of these could cause poor selection.
I had a loose bolt on the selector itself (on top of the gearbox) which was causing selection problems.

All the stuff above, but;

If the transmission is on its last legs then new oil won't make it worse, it just won't make it better. If, however, it's just got the wrong oil or no oil in it then it might well fix it or at least make it better for a while. I reckon it's always worth changing the oil, because oil is cheap and gearboxes are expensive. Mine had ATF in it when I got it - I changed it for the proper synthetic 75w-90 GL-4 and it no longer whines and crunches and changes gear fine now. Still jumps out of reverse sometimes though, but it's got 161k on it so I can live with that.

If it is broken it's probably easier to get a whole used gearbox.
