If this has not been done, the rear will sit on the bump stops at ride height, which will give a very stiff ride in the rear, as well as rubbish grip. Poke your head under the back, and have a look if the bump stops have a gap between them and the rear axle.

Ok, that’s useful info. Thank you very much. I will look.

Suspension question

Postby 2020FMX » Tue May 04, 2021 3:42 pm

I’ve taken a couple of photos of the stopper, trouble is I can’t get the van on the flat easily as it’s real hilly my way. Does that matter?
What do you guys think?

Err, that looks like the bump stop is touching? Have you said which van you have, 290, 310?

It’s a DCIV 320 swb.

That could be part of the problem, originally sports were 290 only, were your rear springs/dampers specifically for a 320?

They were quoted as being for 2014-2021 transit custom sports. The seller has different ones for different years of production.

That's the problem then, they're not the correct dampers (take note that the seller called them 'shockers', which they're not). Also I don't think that it should be sitting on the bump stops like it is, but someone with a Custom 320 would have to confirm or otherwise.

IMO you'd probably get away with the dampers being wrong if it wasn't on the bump stops.

Can the bump stops be cut down to solve the issue?

IIRC there were some shorter bump stops available. Have a search for Seikokid posts, he's lowered his sport and has posted plenty of useful info.

As conrod said above, Bilstein have a video on FB showing the installation on a custom sport, the Technician cuts off the lower section of the stop at about 1:24.

I have had a word with my mechanic guy who agrees with cutting down or fitting shorter stops. (He’s a general mechanic not a suspension specialist, but I’d have thought he would have suggested it himself)!! Never mind, at least I’m getting closer to the desired set up. Thank you all for your input so far. I will update when all is done.

That’s the cheapest and quickest option and should make it ride a bit nicer.
