MK6 2003 problem with automatic transmission

Postby acrylona » Wed Sep 01, 2021 9:21 am

Hi,
The van runs good and smooth, but when I stop, it has hard times coming back from 2nd to 1st gear. Or when i go from N to D, I also have to wait few seconds to have the 1st gear on. Sometimes, also happens with the Rear.
I have really few mechanic knowledge, the only thing i can tell, is the transmission fluid is full, and seems pretty dark.
I thought of changing it completely... Do you think it could solve my problem?
Or any other tip are very welcome!

The car is 98000km (about 60000miles). Got it a year ago, and so far, it's the first issue I've had.

They are known to get slower and worse as the hydraullic pump unit motor burns out. You're probably best getting it done now before it completely fails otherwise it may get stuck in gear and the sensors will get all confused and then not work properly if you let it completely burn and then replace it.

You might also want to change the fluid anyway and consider the hydraullic fluid too but the most important is the motor from what we've worked out between us. They burn out over time and then they can't pump any fluid into the accumulator - which is where the fluid is stored under pressure so that there is instant fluid pressure when the valves open and close. Like i said if you only go to replace it once it's burnt and it fails while in gear the box might not reset and then you're stuck - when you start up, the computer expects it to be in 1st or R.

Thanks for the reply!
Is it something that i can do myself if i get the part, or i need to go to a pro?
Also, is it expensive?

Depends..

Some people DIY it with mixed results. Some say their gearbox doesn't work afterwards - but many of these are people who have (from memory) replaced their motor after the old one completely failed. The motor costs around £4-500 depending on where you get it from however Ford won't sell you one, they'll only sell you the entire HPU for about £5k - plus labour +vat.

Some people have reported success using an ABS pump from a VW Golf - similarly sized and with the motor shaft / spindle filed down to fit in the slot, it works. Obviously if you get one from a scrap yard you're quids in.

The best topic we have about this so far is here - picture of the abs motor is also in there if you can find anything of use on it. There are some tales of people having their existing motor rewound with new coils if its not too badly damaged however if you do this, you must also ensure they change the bearings too as those seize and put the strain on the motor in the first palce from what i've worked out from various clues posted about the web. ONe guy has his rewound and it still didn't perform as they forgot to change the bearings, he sent it back, they changed them and he said it worked like new.

This is all theoretical though. If in doubt, consult someone who knows what they're doing (eg, youtube).

What should i look for?
"hydraulic pump unit motor" doesn't get me so good results.. Is it a better name for it?

If you have a look at the thread i just linked you to and scroll down to the pictures, you might learn something like make, model and country of manufacture. You don't need to read the entire topic..

I can't spoon feed you everything mate, i'm not a ford engineer i'm just trying to assist.

I was the 1 who put pictures of a modified vw abs pump, fitted it to our work van and its been fine over the last 4000 miles, heavy loads, lots of towing ect.

The motor can be removed with the pump left in place, its a bit fiddly but doable, the motor was removed by a different tech at work. After i modified the pump i refitted it and it worked straight away.

The motor was a mk3/4 vw golf abs pump motor, i think work got it of ebay for £10-15. ImageImage

Hey, thx for sharing that!
Here's an upgrade from my side :
I've found brand new motors sold over the internet for 320 euros (https://www.sequparts.com/de/produkt/mo ... shift-asm/), but i'm still considering the cheaper ABS pump alternatives...

I have a question about that alternative : You are talking about modifying the part so it can fit together. Could you give more details about that?
And also what about the 12v power? From the pictures i saw of Golf ABS Pump, it seems very differently built..

At the moment, the van is parked in the streets, and i haven't yet looked underneath to understand the procedure, and evaluate if i need to lift it up, etc...
Haven't found photos or videos describing it either, but from what you said it seems pretty easy..

i have been having problems with my ASM transit for years but now it looks like i am going to have to try and find out the issue, i changed out the pump and it did not help so later i am going to try and change the hydraulic system oil but thats quite expensive to buy.

Dunno if it's near the part of the world you're living in, but this company based in Berlin sells parts and oil especially for FORD ASM gear box :
