Mk5 Smiley Engine light

Postby adrianfo » Sun Apr 24, 2022 11:46 am

Hi
New here after recommendations.
So, It's a 1999 (Smiley) Mk5 2.5 TD with 76,000 miles Autosleeper Motor Home.
The timing belt was replaced about 2000 miles ago.
The engine warning light started to come on after about 50 miles of motorway driving at 60 - 70mph.
The result was a loss of power (limp) but still drivable apart from on hills where power loss was massive.

After turning the engine off and then back on again we could carry on but the light would eventually come back on.
We've found that If we keep off of the motorways and don't rev the backside off it (keep under 3000ish revs) the light stays off for the most part.
We Just got back from a 300 mile trip around the Peak District keeping away from motorways and duel carriageways and it didn't come on once.
We've lived with this for a while now but keeping under 55mph is a pain so we'd like to fix it if poss.

My mate (young mechanic) checked the fault codes and found P1176 - 1178 and 1174. He's good but admits he doesn't know old diesels.
After a cam belt change I understand that if the timing is not spot on then that can cause these types of problems.
If this is the case would re-doing the belts and making sure the timing is spot on fix it or does it indicate that the diesel pump is done. It is the EPIC pump.

Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance
Adrian

P1174 - Pump Camp Position
P1176 - Pump Cam Calibration
P1178 - Pump Bolt Up limits

All of these will cause limp mode.

Top 2 are caused by the lack of lubrication in modern diesel and make the timing cam inside the injection pump physically stick. If its not got too bad you may be able to resolve this by putting a litre of mineral 2 stroke oil in the diesel until the fault disappears (you can then drop down to half a litre).

Bottom one is the injection pump timing being slightly out against the crank sensor (I can't remember if is plus minus 2 or 4 degrees)

Hi Matt
Many thanks for your reply.
I've a couple of questions if that's okay.

Top 2 are caused by the lack of lubrication in modern diesel and make the timing cam inside the injection pump physically stick.

If the 2 stroke oil doesn't fix it would that mean a pump rebuild. I know of a company in Halifax that do this kind of work.

Bottom one is the injection pump timing being slightly out against the crank sensor

could that be a result of not getting the timing spot on after the cam belt change or is this totally fuel pump related.

Thanks for your time Matt

Yes

and its literally just the cambelt timing

Took the Bosch Conversion Option.

UPDATE

Re-checked timing with timing pins not drill bits - absolutely spot on.
Tried running with 2 stroke oil in diesel for half a dozen tanks, no change
After about a year of keeping under 3000 revs which prevented the engine light coming on we finally bit the bullet
Booked it in to "Feathers Diesel" in Halifax whose diagnosis was - the pumps knackered.
Colin said they have a room full of these Lucas Epic pumps and maybe they could make a good un from 20 bad ones but how long will it last.
We took the 2nd option - Bosch conversion with a guarantee and we're really glad we did.

Hammered it all the way home, M62 from Halifax to Beverley, brilliant 70 - 75 all the way.
The missus followed behind and said there was no excessive exhaust smoke......happy days.
So all sorted (hopefully)

Would it be beneficial to carry on adding a litre of 2 stroke oil to a tank.

Thanks everyone

Good to see you got it sorted.

When I remember I put 250ml of 2-stroke in a full tank, it always sounds happier, especially on a long thrash back to the ferry at Rotterdam.
