Car 5th gear set for my 1997 2.5 turbo diesel transit

Postby Firms » Fri Sep 15, 2023 8:17 pm

Searching for a “car” 5th gear for my 1997 Transit smiley 2.5 td to reduce revs in top gear. Understand this gearbox was fitted to 90’s Granadas and only different from car to Transit was taller fifth gear. My gearbox being rebuilt as 5th gear worn out and trying to source correct gear set. Any ideas welcomed

Yes basically it's a 0.76 5th gear from a MT75 fitted to the 2.3 DOHC from May 98 on, or the 2.5TCi Diesel.

There is some good info on the MT75 g/box at this link.

Came across a Motrohome owner who has installed a Laycock J type overdrive in between the propshafts, this would mean redoing the props and hanging the overdrive to the chassis, but he gets a 25% reduction in gearing when selected.

Reducing revs doesn't necessarily translate to less fuel usage or engine wear. The 5th gear In a lot of early gearboxes is not strong enough for towing or dragging a home on your back

They struggled to handle a N/A DI let alone a turbo !

So would you need the complete gearset to match the layshaft as from memory this is cast as one ?
