Front Brake Retracting Springs

Postby mickey boy g » Mon Mar 04, 2024 3:11 pm

Hello gang. I've just changed the cylinders and shoes on both front brakes (see photo). The nearside wheel is now stiff and looks like the new cylinders are too strong for the old springs so they are not doing their job and retracting the shoes from the drum.

Anyone have any new retracting springs, or have a link for a company etc that will have?

I've had no luck finding any of these yet. Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.

Have you tried the swapping the springs over from the side that turns freely to see if the fault goes away? The springs in your picture aren't stretched and look fine visually. At least that would confirm that the springs are indeed causing the problem. Also, have you replaced the flexi hoses? They can start to break up on the inside with age and cause binding brakes as they won't allow the pistons in the cylinders to retract properly.

Good idea. I'll try replacing the flexi pipes while I'm at it.
New conundrum is that the servo unit is probably leaky. Swapped out all the seals from the master cylinder and now the pedals a farting squishy mess. I've removed the servo (after I tested it), seems to have a small leak, probably the diaphragm.
Anyone have any idea what the part number is for these servo units? Cannot find one stamped on it anywhere.
An internet worm hole beckons...

just replaced the servo on my Mk1 Mickey looked a while never found one but LDV have same lockheed brakes. Got a new old stock Ldv on exactly the same apart from the length of the rod to the pedal. Too short just tacked a bolt onto the yolk & screwed on the yoke off my old one. Think there maybe still one on Ebay.
